Welcome to Librarium Online!
I got his model for cheap. And I could use some more points in my mechanized list.
But I just dunno. I've got a full squad of scorps. And so he could lead them in their serpent or infiltrating.
However infiltrating just seems to be like a good way to die when you aren't doing it with most of your army. Especially when the models in question can't assault further than 12", and when the models in question cost so much.
Attacking from the transport he could probably get into CC. But he's just so expensive and doesn't seem like he'd hold up against other similarly priced HQ choices (like freakin' demons!).
However I'm still a little tempted. If the scorps assault a unit only the models that can get into B2B with him or don't get into B2B with a scorp can attack him. So if only a small number of attacks are coming his way he could easily live to put that claw to good use. And if a TMI or whatever strickes out swinging at him he could return a lot of hurt.
Still, so pricey.....
Anyone have any experience or thoughts?
"I did my first model at the age of 7"
Wow. When I first read that I misinterpreted it. Bad.
i got him thinking he would be a huge boon...and hes only been used a couple times. shame cause he is VERY powerful, 6 power fist attacks = dead everything. but no invuln save means hes toast after 1 fight.
Sadly most of the Phoenix Lords under perform. He should be able to able to handle units without powerweapons on his own generally because of his great WS and save. Maybe infiltrate him with the scorps and then sick him on a squad by himself. Not for tournies but for friendly games he could be fun to play with from time to time.
Lol, funny this topic was here. on my way home from a game i was thinking about how to use karandras... The best way i say to use him is to not take him with a squad, becuase he has fleet of foot being a pheonix lord. then either infiltrate or out flank him (i suggest infiltrate) becuase he does have fleet of foot, plus he is 1 model, so he can be very easy to hide by himself. He will be good at taking out a tac squad by himself or maybe something of the sort that doesnt have power weapons or few attacks.
Actually 5th edition sort of made that an option. Since you know (within a 1 in 6 chance) if you have the first turn, it means if you can put him at 12.5 inches of an enemy squad there is a solid chance he'll be able to connect. And between his save, WS, and eternal warrior rule there is a fair chance he'd survive combat with lots of whole units, even though he'd fold under deadlier CC units. And if cover is involved he can get a solid 3+ cover save and still has eternal warrior going for him.
Sadly most likely there won't be a good charge target for turn one assaulting and even if there was you'd probably just be making a trade.
Just an idea looking at Karandras "on his own", meaning "not with Scorpions"... You could put him with a small Pathfinder unit (they are NOT Aspect warriors, so that is allowed), in deep infiltration. They would benefit from his high Ld, and he may be a good deterrent against assault units going for the Pathfinders.
It does not mean he would be worth his point value that way, of course. But I just throw the idea, see what you guys make of it...

And besides, he can outflank. Do not underestimate that. Few players wish to concentrate Heavy weapons that are to bring your tanks down in the middle, with few firing lines.
This question should be simple to answer,
when one of the Phoenix lords joins his unit (the one hes suited to, you know what i mean) that unit gets the special rules, that the exarch can be upgraded with (like Jain Zar giving the banshees Acrobat and war shout) meaning i wouldn't need to spend the extra points on the exarch.
(p.s Are the Banshee, Swooping Hawk and Dire Avenger, Phoenix lords any good, poss fire dragon if i get 5 of them)
Correct the PL have the exarch powers. As for which PL are worth the points I think Muegan Ra and Jain Zar can both be worth the points, Fuegan and Karandras sometimes are worth the points, Asurmen and Baharroth are generally not worth the points. Note these are my opinions so take them with a grain of salt.
