Ive noticed that very few people who use 2 hive tyrants use them both in a close combat role. am i missing a glaringly obvious flaw or what? id have thought 2 cc tyrant with 3 guard each would be very hard to beat, even 1 winged 1 walker would be good. thoughts?
2 slow. Even with running they won't reach cc until round 3 (unless 1 has wings). That's why it's better to give 1 a fire support role. Besides, a dakka tyrant is too good a shooter to pass up. The amount of firepower he can put up against infantry is just downright scary. Besides 1 cc tyrant & 1 dakkarant with 6 guards is arguably harder to beat, but would start doing damage much sooner...just place 2 of the dakkarant's guards behind cover and start blasting away. It's much easier for the guards to fit behind cover to give the entire unit a cover save.
CCFlyrants were commonly used in 3rd ed, but with devs being so good you can get a couple more kills if you use devs then charge than if you just charged with 2x ST. Also as jy2 said, with devs you can start the killing from farther away and sooner. You also don't have to worry about hidden powerfists.

Well that explains that one. I can see what you mean actually. ah well thanks, rep to you both for being helpful
I read this thread with intrest due to the fact I run a mostly close combat nid army. I run duel Tyrands one winged with talons and bone sword lash whip and another with talons and rending claws and of course his guards. They do real well, the winged tyrant and winged warriors I also field do a number on the marines I ussually play. Allowing the other tyrant and my big fex's to close in. Course the two large groups of homoguants help too. the army doesnt always win, but its fun to play and feels alot closer to the unstopable rush close combat fighting bugs are meant to do. (side note starship troopers was filmed partailly in my back yard at hells half acre.) But for some reason I didnt get to see there guest staring bugs it was all hush hush. Hope this helps with your curiosity if you want a full army list of what I do mesage me. The entire army minus a few fex's is close combat specialists.
