If a swarm gets hit with a S6 blast weapon do the wounds that hit it still double and each of thoes cause insta death due to str being double toughness?
So if you had two bases get hit by a blast template. Then rolled two wounds. Do the wounds double first to 4 wounds and then all 4 wounds cause insta death? ex: kill 4 bases of swarms (12 wounds)
or do the two wounds just cause insta death? ex: two dead bases (6 wounds).
Further more you get no saves from all templates any way right? (unless the center of the hole of the blast template happens to be on the other side of a wall).
Having such low toughness and taking double wounds is brutal.
The wounds just cause Instant Death. So if the template hits only 2 out of a unit of 5 ripper swarms, only 2 dies and not 4.
If it's a flamer temp, then you don't get cover save. And you only get armor saves if your armor save is greater than the AP of the weapon. Unfortunately, ripper swarms have bad armor saves, and so get no saves against temp weapons.
Against blasts, a ripper swarm will only get a save if it is in area terrain. If they get the Extended Carapace upgrade, they will get armor saves vs Missile Launcher blasts, Grenade Launcher blasts, and other AP6 blasts if they are not in cover
Basically you have to look at low toughness, low cost models as sacrificial units. The best use for them would be to tie up expensive enemy units and delay them from doing real damage to your other more valuable units in your army.
Actually, I'm pretty sure a S6 blast weapon that hits 2 bases would kill 4 bases. The instant death means that the unit now takes 6 wounds, which are then doubled to 12.
