I've run a almost full close combat army for as long as ive played nids. I have a opponet in Apopcalypse who fields a plaugereaper baneblade. I am looking at ideas for a mostly shooting nid army to throw this person off balance what r the idea's floating out there. thanks for the help.
Nid shooting is about one thing. Volume of fire. Nids don't have any decent AP guns. The best you can get is AP4 on your biggest guns. The only way to compensate is by throwing so much fire out there that they will eventually fail an armor save. Even ten terminators will eventually die if they have to make 50-100 armor saves every round. Template weapons help as-well.
Twin-linked Devourers on carnifexes rock.
For anti-armor our ranged selections are very limited. Sniper-fexes are pretty much our best option. While glancing will not destroy a tank, it will strip off weapons and stop the tank long enough for you to get into melee range.
Bottom line for shooting. Volume, volume, volume.
I know I'm really spamming this suggestion, but nothing beats warriors with EC and TL-DSs. 9 cost almost 300 points, sure, but you'll hit your target with so many blasts, you're sure to kill something. I'f you're feeling really cheesy (and somewhat suicidal) give them +1S. 5 S6 AP5 blasts right on target on average each and every turn? Yes please.
There is another way, apart from sheer volumes of fire. Sheer volumes of pinning fire, with psychic scream back up. If you take 3 zoans with 2 tyrants, then as many barbed stranglers as you can, you can reduce even the hardest troops, excluding fearlessness the a measly LD5. then pin them and watch as his army struggles to move into position as you pour fire into it. heck if want to be realy nasty and you have enough synapse around, take warpblast too, S5 ap 3 templates nasty. Also with this sort of list you could use biovores, as i belive that sporemine fire counts as a barrage, which forces pinning checks. as final note ive recently been using a walking tyrant with 3 guard, a set of TL devourers and sything tallons, with warpblast. This actually dose quite nice as a shooty unit, as you still have infantry killing power, can kill marines better, and can even have a go at tanks if needes be, so its a bit more versitlie than the 2 TL devourers setup, even if it cost a lot more.
