Title says it, I am having a hard time taking out MC, more specifically Tyranid Carnifex's
So here is the situation.
- I was playing a nid player, he had 4 carnifexes. Couple of them were base and a couple were pretty CC oriented.
- So I dont play Mega Nobz much so I thought I would try them out. I had a decked out Nobz gang with 3 PK's and a MA Warboss with 3x MANz gang in trucks.
- I dismounted both groups, charged hard forward with massive PK's in hand annnnnnnnnd my MANz and warboss got ROASTED. The Carnifex had a bonus wargear to their inititive so he struck faster then the MANz, to add to that, my MANz didnt get their 2+ save!!! since MC's attack like PW?!?! its crazy... so not only did they not get saves but they died before attacking, it was a disaster.
- Now the Nobz did well, the 'fex attacks were absorbed by 5+ invulnerables and spare scape goat nobz. So my 3 PK's put a hurting on the 'fex.
There were two things that I wanted to know:
1- is it true that MANz dont get their 2+? I know it says MC's "ignore armour just like powerweapons"
2- in a similarlight, does that also mean that the Nobz dont get their Fell No Pain??? I would argue that power weapons do not allow FnP, BUT it says it ignors armour like FnP, not it "has the same exact characteristics as a power weapon thus ignoring armour. A little bit of extrapolating would also say that FnP is not an armour save, and is ignored by power weapons, not MC CC weapons???? am I right out of it ??
Thanks for the input gents!!! I need help taking out MC's!!!
Oh My! Regular nobz is bestest!
Yes, your MANZ are paste - no 2+ save for joo.
Boyz are good for this....specifically the Nob leading them. You have plenty of boyz for soak off casualties and the nob can do his thing safely.
Right on Cossack! Makes perfect sense.
- So, just like I dont get my armour saves (unless invulnerable cybork 5+) then the same goes for the PK wounds against the Fex rightÉÉ
- Another thought is, since a Fex is St9, wouldnt that also mean that his unsaved wounds against my nob squad would be instadeath woundsÉÉ making it even more reasonable to engage with regular boysÉÉ
- And the fact stand that my painboy nob squad doesnt get FnP from the Fexès CC attack ÉÉ
Why is my dang keyboard pumping out french characters!!! grrrr.
Damn traitor keyboard....
Yes, all the nobz get instant-killed by carnifexes. Meganobz aren't a good force for the job (unless the carnifex absolutely MUST die that turn, regardless of the cost). Regular nobz and biker nobz fare slightly better, since they have a cybork save, with regular nobz being the most cost effective.
Still, because of the very low number of attacks the Carnifex gets, the best thing to throw at them are normal boyz (which is why I think assault fexes are inferior to shooty 'dakka fexes'). Normal boyz will destroy the fex much more slowly, but the fex is going to have a much harder time plowing through them all.
However, my absolute favorite unit for taking out monstrous creatures is definitely killa kans w/kustom mega blastas. They can soften them up with their kmbs, and they strike with strength 10 in close combat, which is certainly nothing to sneeze at.
All things considered, meganobz aren't the best of choices for this instance. You're better off giving them combi-scorchas, and using them to roast genestealers.
"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
Thanks guys! Clarification is awesome. Regular boys it is, plus, he wont be able to pull away from combat so I could tie him up until either him or I dies!
Killa Kans is also an interesting idea, I have 6 on the table to be painted 3x grotzooka and 3x KMB...
O yeah, still un answered. Are successful wounds agasint a Fex using Powerweapon¨s and Powerklaws ignore its 2+ .... the guy I played said that because he was a MC that my PowerKlaws at St 9 on the charge and WB at St 10 on the charge didnt ignore his armour... he couldnt find the rule, but I couldnt prove him wrong.
You're friend is mistaken. Power Klaws/Power Weapons ignore all armor saves. The monstrous creature rule does not give any special immunity against armor-ignoring attacks.
As stated above, your best choice is probably Boyz. But I will expand upon this further:
Your opponent LOVES his Carnifex! Trust me, you don't spend $50 on a model and not love it. This is very beneficial for you, as he is not going to want to spend several turns wading through cheap Boyz, only to accumulate /maybe/ 60 points worth of kills by the end of the game.
Plus, all the while he's squishing little green 'eads, your PK Nob is going to be laying down some serious hurt! He'll likely try to evacuate his Fex from combat by assaulting with another brood -- Gaunts, Goyles, or Geneys likely.. but possibly even Warriors if you're lucky! Use this to your advantage in whichever way you please... cause nothing is quite as fun as using an opponent's model as a magnet against himself ^-^
If he does begin sending more resources into the fray, you might keep a fast, heavy hitting element within reach to charge in and smash 'em apart, then promptly leave the combat. Or, you may decide to allow him to tarpit not only his carnifex, but another unit as well, and simply walk around and start carving a path towards his Synapse creatures with one less unit in the way to worry about.
Beyond that, I would recommend purchasing a copy of the rule book and getting yourself very familiar with it. It's common for myself and my one friend to stop a game for a few minutes to consult the book - neither of us wish to play by the wrong rules simply to win (when instead we could replace our broken strategy with a real one) , especially not if we were to find ourselves at a tournament and proven wrong at the worse possible moment! Granted, it's unique to find two players who don't mind doing this so often, so knowing all relevent rules and relative page numbers ahead of time is a great resource. Just say "Nope, page 43, read it yourself, fool" Mind you, you have to say "fool" like Mr. T
I've recently become a fan of this thing called Dubstep. And you should too.

Indeed, your nobz aren't going to get their armour saves but your klaws are going to deny him his as well. The guy you were playing against either misread the rules or was willfully lying to save his fexes from the wrath of the klaw.
But yeah to back up everyone else, against a melee fex, just rush him with boyz led by a pk toting nob. They'll cut him down to size in time.
