One of the recent thread set me to thinking. I know theres a "proper/set" way to build a competitive Tyranid list, but I doubt everyone follows that all the time. So I thought "hey, why not find out some of the crazy builds, and what they've done from some other people." So I present:
The Tyranid Crazy Build Thread
Post some of the out of the ordinary ones you've run and what happened with them. Did you build a fex that took out an entire opposing army by itself? Or perhaps a HT that managed to take down a Monolith? Let's hear about it. Tell us the base unit, what upgrades it had, and what amazing thing it did that will make us all want to try it out in our own fleets. Here's my example.
Unit: 20 Hormagaunts
Upgrades: All of them!
What it did: These guys were a blast. I was playing a CSM player running 3x3 Oblits, Lash prince duo and three squads of Plaguemarines in Rhinos. One squad managed to retaliate and kill a Prince that charged them THE TURN it did so, and proceeded to glance one of the Rhino's to death refusing to let the Marines inside come out and play by completely surrounding it. The other group took out a trio of Oblits in two rounds. Sure they're expensive but damn can they kill given the right incentive.
Suicide genestealer force
unit: genestealers x 6
scything talons, toxin sacs and scuttlers
: have single-handedly taken out 5 terminators and captains at once. Have taken out numerous tanks (the make lascannon preds craters) and have had only two genestealers make marine tac squads flee in terror. There hasnt been one battle where they have outflanked to live to tell the tale but always go even on there point cost or above.
SS flyrant with Warp blast.
Not too uncommon, but the most memorable action was in a game against Chaos. The chaos lord (A CC monster in his own right) had a retinue that was widdled down to zero from other actions, leaving the lord by himself and in the open. I moved my tyrant (down to one wound) to attack. Flew near by, went with high powered warp blast and insta killed him, he then failed his invul. save.
havent played with that configuration again as it is far to costly point wise and it never earned its points back in other games, but for that one game it was easily the star.
Then charged a cultist squad, killed a few and it died when the squad attacked back.
Conversely, I have used a 8-body stealer squad that never rended. ~3 rounds of combat and not one rend. It however was smushed.
As of Tyranid 5th Ed. codex I have the Gaunts I wanted. I did, however, loose the sniperfexs I relied upon and they were more important then the gaunts.
I was involved in a game where I used a Dakka Flyrant, 2 carnifexes, and the rest souped-up genestealers (about 36 - EC, ST, Scuttlers, TS, FH) in 1500 game vs space wolves. He went first and by turn 2, he shot out most of my genestealers. I had maybe about 5 left and my TMC's. I on the other hand, failed to do much damage to his army at all. So I'm left with my flyrant, 2 carnies (slowly chugging along) and just a handful of genies while he still had most of his army intact.
My dakkarant then proceeded to wipe out almost 2/3 of his army with just its shooting. He would shoot and move back when they tried to assault. The only ranged weapon my opponent really had was his dread (which my remaining genies destroyed) and a few assault cannons. When all was said and done, I still had my 200pt flyrant remaining and he had about 200pts worth of SW left. But because my flyrant was down to 2 wounds left, he was worth 1/2 points only so my opponent won on Victory Points by the slimmest of margins (we were playing 4th edition then).
In the previous edition I usualy fielded a very CC heavy list. Waves of gaunts followed by stealers and MCs. My favorite unit was a brood-lord with 10 pumped up genestealers. They were often feared and the first target every game. Both stealers and lord had +str, +init, talons and flesh hooks.
One game centered around a large building in the middle of the map. It provided cover, line of sight and overall protection. (It was my daughters "little people" house, worked great.) My opponent took terminator filled rhino and drove it straight into the building wall. Out pops his terminators ready to conquer the world. Unfortunatly for them they were unable to see the lord/stealer unit on the other side of the building. (IE: couldn't shoot them.) My turn.
I move my lord/stealer combo around one side of the building. Followed by a unit of 20 hormogaunts around the other. Hey look, a rhino and terminators plus commander! Lets go say hello! The resulting melee decimated the terminators and caused a critical explosnion of the rhino, taking out anther terminator. If I remember correctly he had one figure left on the table after that. I had to roll my entire brick of dice for that one. 40 stealer attacks, 5 or for the lord, 60 for the gaunts...
Had quite a bit of fun with a friendly force of 18 deathspitter rending raveners. one unit killed several guardsmen, one managed to take out some sentinels and the third however the third, deep striked behind a demolisher russ. Whilst they didnt hurt it, the other nearby leman russ, shot at them, missed, scattered on to the demolisher and proceeded to blow it up. I felt very pleased!
Last week my tusked Crushofex took out a monolith...not that wow but still.. i love rolling 6s...
funny part of the game was how his 2 other monoliths refused to come on till right at the end...he even rolled double 1s on turn 4 for reserves...
