    Help the old guy

Hey, I've been out of 40k for about 2 years, I am back and looking (again) at the Orks.
But I see they have a new codex, how much has changed (I have the last one)?

I ask cuz I get all my models online (no store w/in 2 hrs) and I really just want to get modeling and painting again. Have things really changed or will a 1000 pt army made from the old codex be at least close?

or are there some crazy new rules/upgrades I need to be aware of?

Actually I think you can use the previous codex army very well. What do you have?

Hey, I'm in the same boat, except I bet I'm older than you because I haven't played Orks since 3rd Ed was new! I just picked up the latest Codex at the gaming store tonight, though, for a little peep, and I was stoked! It is easily the best codex that they have done. It retains some of the old fashioned Orky humor from the days of 1st and 2nd Ed, but looks like it can be a really competitive and flexible army.

I've always loved the models and the way Orks don't take themselves too seriously. It is a fun army to play when you need a break from, say, the "tournament mindset" in all it's seriousness.

They're a great balance to my beloved Space Marines, so I guess it's time to get Og "Da Boss" Grotstompa back on the field once more.

What would be a good 500 or 750pt starter army?
4 bionic bitz for Og "Da Boss" Grotstompa
    40 grots stomped
    400 boyz killed in action
4000 light years of "Ere we go, Ere we go, Ere we Go" without a break
    $40K spent on GW

I'm a SM commander with about 20 service studs in my head.

Boss w/ eavy armour and Bionic bounce, PK and Choppa
20 slugga boyz w. some BS, nob w/ PK and Choppa
(not sure on 2nd troop yet... sluggas or shootas)
3 Kanz w/ BS or a looted basilisk (gonna be a good model)

and was gonna run buggies, but I want come kopptas w/ rokkits for tank hunting. dont know much about them, but their fast and look cool - I'm sold

if there are points left I will probably add a painboss w. cyborks - I just really want to model the cyborks, I have a bunch of necron and Smurf bits from days gone by, gonna be good.
and maybe a mob of grotz - I love those guys, 60pts makes a good size mob. Especially if I'm footslogging up the board.

but yah, I think I'm gonna buy the new box set (Attack on Black Ridge? or something). that'll give me a good place to start eh?

Yes, you can use all of that stuff. And get AoBR - wonderful troops in there.

My first Ork army was 2nd edition...then I did the more 'tame' version in 3rd. Last year I saw this codex and fell in love with the kareening trukks, return of the shokk attack gun and other silly stuff.

    The trukks are REALLY cool....

    The main difference between codex:

Boys are 66.6666....% of the previous price

Looted vehicles now use the 'looted vehilce' statline...........
(basicly a rhino with a short range battle cannon, i miss my
    looted demolisher ._.)

    choppas are gone

    trukks can hold 2 more

grot riggers go in shooting phase instead of before movment

lootas lose the cool choices, and instead get one choice... which
can own most units they shoot at..

    and thats about it really..
oh, and painboys are no longer an HQ, but weirdboys are

    Grots/SoB/CSP/AWN/DE

Choppas are there, but the Heavy Close Combat Weapon rule is gone. So your Orks still have Choppas, but they not longer reduce armour saves to 4+.

The Cyborks unit is gone, the Cybork Upgrade (Invul Save) is available for Nobs and such.

Painboyz are an upgrade to a Unit of Nobz, which are Elite, but can be taken as a Troop choice if you have a Warboss.

I know... I was sad too. But don't worry, once you've gotten a taste of the new lootas and the awesomness known as the nob biker squad you'll be over it.
