Welcome to Librarium Online!
Im sick of Eldrad. Im sick of his overuse, his label of a cheesy character, his presence in far too many Eldar armies. His general unfluffiness.
ELDRAD IS DEAD. EVEN IF HE WASNT DEAD HE PROBABLY WOULDNT BE IN YOUR 1000 POINT DETACHMENT DEFENDING SOME BACKWATER PLANET IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE.
AND ANOTHER THING. HE IS AN ULTHWE FARSEER. SO STOP TAKING HIM IN YOUR RANDOM CRAFTWORLD'S ARMY.
NOW I DONT MIND PEOPLE WHO AT LEAST MAKE UP THE FLUFF TO GO WITH ELDRAD, AND PUT IN THE EFFORT TO MAKE AN ULTHWE THEME, BUT SERIOUSLY HE IS IN TOO MANY LISTS AND ITS GETTING DOWNRIGHT EMBARRASSING WHEN PEOPLE BASE THEIR WHOLE ARMY AROUND A DEAD FARSEER.
OBVIOUSLY THEY PUT HIM IN THE CODEX SO HE COULD BE USED, BUT ITS THE SAME AS IF A BLOOD ANGLES PLAYER TOOK MARNEUS CALGAR AS HIS CHAPTER MASTER, HOW WOULD THAT MAKE ANY SENSE. AND ITS EVEN WORSE BECAUSE ELDRAD IS DEAD, I MEAN UNLESS HE IS THE DAMN CRYPTKEEPER, HES GONE.
p.s. unless you didnt know, Eldar are pretty damn good without Eldrad.
The Hand that guides.
And I'm sick of facing Pedro, Calgar, Vulkan, Shrike, Lysander, Abbadon, Typhus, Gaz gul and others in peoples 1000 point detactment on some backwater planet in the middle of nowhere, Atleast Eldrad could be there trying to change the future on some small and seemingly random battle.
The problem with eldrad is that he is amazing for it points, ( hint you can spend more on a regular farseer and end up with less ). While he was a farseer of Ulthwe he did help other craftworlds (he did forsee and warn Iyanden about the nid invasion ). With the new marine codex out and it incouraging people to play the named characters just with different name and maybe modified figure its hard to try and cry cheese on them showing up in any army.
He is not dead! He will return! We can save him!
I play Ulthwe and actually don't use him so go figure

I guess my main concern is just that people dont use him in Ulthwe lists. And regarding space marines, I wont play people that use special characters that arent in their chapter. My friend takes a Vulkan list all the time, but he spent loads of time repainting his wole army salamaders and making up fluff.
So the thing that annoys me I guess is the random new eldar player who just says hey this guy is really good and everyone else gets him so Ill get him too.

I use eldrad, alot, he is an extremely good character, and if my opponent asks why he would be fighting in such a small ksirmish, i make up something about him redirecting the efforts of the blah blah's from army A to army B and saving the entire planet, however i used him today in a 45000 point apocalypse battle, 2 Baneblades. enough said.

The Marine codex goes so far as to say that people should just remodel a little and use the same rules with a different name. If you don't like it thats fair but the codex supports them not being in their chapter. I've seen an eldar corsair army that has a counts as yriel and a counts as eldrad (both have unique models) both had fluff to back it up but neither of the characters are in the normal army are you saying this is unfluffy? You don't see eldrad in Ulthwe lists because most people will not play Ulthwe ( guardian hate is a powerful thing ).
As for new players it depends on why they are starting, if they want to be competitive eldrad makes a very good option. If they are starting because they like the fluff they will generally turn away from things that do not sit well with the fluff they like.
Exactly! Named chars used to be either awful or a points sink. In recent dexs they've boosted these options and made them viable. Eldrad is awesome but like people are saying, just paint him your craftworlds colours and say hes there most powerful farseer.
Oh and hes not dead if you base your army before the Blackstone Fortress incident
I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand
Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.
take a powerful CC unit to eldrad and see what happens. or a shooty unit. anything can kill eldrad. he has absolutely no combat value whatsoever, he is there to be a buffer only.
210 points for one group being buffed seems balanced to me. they are great buffs sure, but thats all eldrad can do. thats all farseers can do well period.
eldrad is slow, no ranged attack power, good melee attack power but only 1 attack makes it not that helpful at all, no ability to have a jetbike...
yeah. thats so overpowered. *rolls eyes*
edit: as far as fluff goes, all eldar life is sacred. saving the life of 1 guardian is worth the effort in the eyes of the eldar. everyone knows that.

Another one of the reasons I believe people take him is that he's the only way you can cast the same power twice without taking a second Farseer. If Spirit Stones let you cast ANY two powers per turn (barring Mind War and Eldritch storm because they're shooting attacks) then people would probably take normal Farseers more as they probably don't absolutely NEED the three powers a turn from a single Farseer, they just need the double of the same power off of one.

No. When we just need two powers you can get it from two farseers for less than Eldrad. Which is actually what I do since I don't own the model.
However I'm thinking of getting him since in addition to getting the powers you get to replace a chunk of your force, and get that 3+ invul with reroll and T4 so that you can actually put him up against a lot of enemy HQs.
Anyway I think the idea is that while the stories focus on certain characters every craftworld/chapter etc at one time or another has those sort of exceptional characters.
I'm not sure why they did that, maybe because they found people just really liked having special characters, maybe because you can only have one in the army so you can try stuff without as much risk at totally imbalancing the game, maybe because it lets them sell a piece of metal for $20 that has as far as I can tell the same size and detail as models they sell for $7, or maybe they just really like making up and modeling special characters and than nobody using them.
I'm guessing all of the above.
