I absolutely love the wraithlord models. My favorite model in the game by far.
I want to field a list with 3 wraithlords, as the towering glimmering silent faceless death ghost center pieces of my army. That being said, I will be shooting to play 1,000 - 1,500 max games, as I feel that the smaller games require the most strategy and are the most fun.
My question is, since I know I want the tactics centered around the lords, what should I field with them? How should a wraithlord list be played? I was thinking a decent seer council with a couple spirit seers more or less in the middle of the wraith triangle. Takes care of wraithsight, and frankly a fat seer council and three lords running up the field should be able to crush quite a lot of opposition. the rest of the points would be on masses of guardians with warlocks, like squads of 20, with conceal or embolden to take pot shots, cover objects, and have numbers.
How would you use a list with 3 lords and what would you field? triple wraithlord tactica anybody??
PS I was thinking like 1 lord with a lance, 1 with a shurken cannon, 1 with scatter laser.
Is there any real value in putting two guns on a lord? should twin linking a gun on a lord be a serious option?
One of my favorite things to do with a wraithlord army is to run them up next to harlequins with a shadowseer, Harlequins will stop them getting bogged down in lots of troops whilst the shadowseer keeps wraithsight happy. Also a advantage of harlequins over a seer council is the shadowseers ability letting him get much further up the board before been picked off by your opponent to cause wraithsight.
First off, I think the three Wraithlords might work quite well if you use them nicely. The seer council might not be your best bet for countering Wraithsight, but then again when you consider the other options the only other really viable one is a Harlie squad with a Shadowseer (which IS pretty devastating tbh). Yes, of course there is value in putting two guns on a 'lord but you should probably consider putting wraithswords on one as well - they get few enough attacks as it is without missing on one or two, although two or three WLs in combat could make up for that. Bear in mind that two guns on a Wraithlord with BS4 is going to be pretty devastating, maybe give two of them brightlances (NOT two on one so that it's twin-linked) and then you'll easily be able to counter other races' heavy armour, eg Leman Russes ¬¬.
On the troops side, I suggest NOT using masses of guardians as point-fillers as they will just die in droves and not have any function on the battlefield if your Wraithlords get taken out. You'd be better off with a distraction unit, something that looks like a threat but isn't as much of a threat as the Wraithlords, like an Avatar which will attract probably as much fire as the Wraithlords but is almost as durable. Obviously this won't work if you have a clever opponent who recognises that the Avatar isn't a threat until it gets close, but most opponents will split their fire between the Wraithlords and the Avatar and you'll be able to get both units moving forward relentlessly and not dying. Eventually you will be able to get the 'Lords into combat and feel the power of one of the greatest tarpits in 40K
For troops, I suggest some Dire Avengers mounted in Wave Serpents, maybe 2 or 3 units if you can fit it. These will carry out the necessary troop functions like capturing and holding objectives where the WL and Avatar can only contest them, and generally being annoying to your enemies.
I'm not really worried about their equipment, just trying to plan it economically. I mean three of them with just cannons is honestly a viable, scary and cheap option. 9 Str 6 shots with good BS lumbering together to get into CC. One of the reasons I like playing small games is it forces you to think in terms of scarcity even more. Three lords means no prisms, no falcons. So on an offensive ranged role, I have to think in terms of that. on a defensive or close combat role, well har har har bring it. Using them as a unit (not technically but you get it) will be my tactic I think
I dig the idea of the avatar. don't you think that 40 guardians with a 5+ rerollable cover save, fearless cause of the avatar and marching behind 3 lords, avatar and harlies will be survivable? If not then I may have to ditch the harlies and replace guardians with avengers in serpents, classic eldar norm now. Don't mind it,it can be really good, just need those psykers. i ain't playing no baby wraithsight games.
Wraithlords are great, remember to always give them the 2 flamers to help thin out units before the charge. I may get some flack for this but I say field a unit of wraithguard as troops add on conceal to give you a save against low AP shots and a farseer to fortune them. Warlock on one side and farseer on the other side gives you a good range on where the lords can go without having to test. Grab another troop (maybe guardian unit or rangers) and give weapons to the lords to taste (if you go with the wraithguard the lords are going to have to fill your long range shooting role). My friend runs this at 1000 points, most armies simply don't have enough heavy weapons to stop all that wraithbone marching up the table. If you go higher drop in the avatar for another scary MC and another troop and/or melee unit. Harlies with shadowseer gives another pysker to babysit the lords so would be a good choice.
i use 2 in my army
both have bright lances, missile launchers, and dual flamers.
lances shred mech and high armor targets, missiles can shred mech or infantry, flamers are a no brainer compared to the shuri cata's.
dont bother taking a wraithsword, smart players will stay miles away from melee with a wraith.

If you are running 3 as a central piece of the army, then keep them cheap with wraithswords and flamers. Then use the avatar, so the enemy is up against 4 monstrous creatures that can dominate assault. Just run them across the board into whatever you need to smash.
A squad of wraithguard with spirit seer complements this pretty well, as would a squad of harlies with shadowseer.
If you are going to stand and shoot with them, the brightlance and EML is a good choice. Three of those might be a bit of overkill, so doing two of those and one with Scatter Laser and Star Cannon could be a good choice.

I think that if you're taking 3, and you're playing at 1000-1500 points, you don't really need to kit them out with guns that specifically bust tanks. Chances are, you're not gonna have a lot of points for troops once you get your 3 WLs, enough psykers to keep them moving, and kit for everyone. This means that you'll probably want to focus your shooting on killing enemy troops, since it's a little more difficult to wipe infantry squads out with so few attacks in CC. However, when it comes right down to it, a WL assaulting any tank in the game has a pretty big chance of bringing it down.
What I'm trying to say is, if you're taking 3, either take 'em cheap as heck, or make them shred infantry. I would suggest a scatter laser/EML combo or just shuricannons for shooting up infantry. The EML allows you to have a little bit of long range anti-tank if you're concerned about it, and you can always drop the mini blast for extra anti-infantry.While I wouldn't take a Wraithsword (because I'd rather shoot), that's kind of a weak arguement. A smart player might counter everything you do, so there would be no point in taking anything.dont bother taking a wraithsword, smart players will stay miles away from melee with a wraith.
What about some war walkers too, converted to be an homage to wraithlords? The wraithguard are the obvious troops choice, seeing as they just can't be killed off! This leaves HQ (farseer/avatar where points allow) and another troops slot. Some bikes may not be fluffy but would fill a role nicely.
