Welcome to Librarium Online!
title says it all. i am just starting out my second army (first being eldar) and i chose tyranid as my new project.
however, i have never faught tyranid and know absolutely nothing about them.
i just got the codex, with a battleforce and a brood lord in transit.
so before i start delving deep and spending money, what is generally considered the best layout vs. MEQ's? i typically only play with friends and they are sisters of battle and space marines respectively.
i have disposable income and can essentially buy whatever i want to make a dream army. the goal is to get a 1500 point MEQ shredder.
i typically stray away from battlesets as they include the bare minimum for an army, but its price and the units included seemed pretty solid.
any advice is welcome!
One of the best MEQ killer is a tyrant with 2x Twin-linked Devourers. You can either give him wings or some tyrant guard bodyguards. Genestealers are great against marines (and almost everyone else). I also like to get Zoans as their AP3 Warp Blasts are deadly against marines and they could be used as synapse. Finally, you have your carnifexes (basically, the tyranid tanks). I either configure them with 2x Twin-linked Devourers or with 2 Scything Talons. Lastly, I'd consider getting more gaunts and give them Without Numbers so you can recycle them back into play when they die. This gives you, in essence, unlimited troops.
i agree- genestealers ruin everyone's day. The key is that you don't even need too many of them. I personally like to pin the enemy in place with lots of hormagaunts (with their incredible charge range) to deny their charge before ploughing through with 8 or so 'stealers.
If either of them run character heavy lists, or just lots of things with more than 1 wound, try giving Implant Attack on your genestealers a shot. Even consider taking it on a Broodlord alone, if you tend to see just one tough character that you want to get rid of. Genestealers, and the Broodlord, are our greatest assets in killing MEQ's in CC.
You may also want to look around for a thread about how they play. I'm sure there are some bouncing around here, pretty recently.
Try to focus your entire list around one play style. If you're going melee; hormagaunts, stealers, brood-lord, flying tyrant. If you prefer range; bring lots and lots of devourers, spitters, some venom cannons and stranglers. And flying tyrant. For nids there's only two ways to effectivly kill MEQ.
1) attack first and rend the tar out of them. (not so easy in this edition.) Preventing their save means more dead marines.
2) overwhelm them with high volume of ranged firepower. Nid ranged fire lacks in -AP shots so volume is more important.
One thing to also plan for is armor. Nids also lack in ranged anti-armor. our best tactic is to imobilize the tank so our MCs can close and rip it open. The best option we have for that still remains the sniper-fex. (fex with 1 BS, 1 VC.)
For about 1k my current personal preference:
2+ units of spinegaunts.
1-2 units of warriors. Splitting tl-devs and deathspitters/BS between the two.
1-2 carnifex w/ tw-devourers.
1 flyrant with warp-field and tl-devs.
Of course I can add in quite a bit more for 2000 points. I usualy have a unit of hormagaunts and stealers in there for melee roadbumps.
Thank you for the input everyone, i think i can understand things a bit better now.
They are not that popular, but 3x Zoans with Warp Blast are great against MEQs. No good alone, but with support their S5 AP3 area shots can lay waste on MEQs. They'll buy their points in kills in a single turn of shooting.
Necron Army Building Maxima: Beware of Phase Out
Devs on all your big bugs, and watch out for sniper types and sternguard.
I wouldn't worry to much about ranged anti vehicle, MC's can hunt down vehicles pretty effortlessly.
As previously mentioned, genestealers are good at everything, just make sure you upgrade there carpace if you dealing with a large volume of bolters.
Lictors are great for combat squaded out marines.
Troop choices... Cheap gaunts ;P
