What makes an army popular? Is it variety? Dark Eldar are either wyches or warriors. Are there fun units which are not over powered but still viable? Maybe if we started an army which features hellions or grotesques. I think if we really want our new codex we need to make Dark Eldar look fun from the point of view of those Space Marine players. I don't think we need to dig out dirty tricks to get our goals (I know I'm speaking to pirates and slavers but hear me out.) What drew you to the darkness?
This is going to sound distinctly unhelpful, but I'll say it anyway.
1. I was drawn to the fact that no one else played them. I like being the person who picks the most random thing he can find.
2. I liked the models. I may be the only person in this universe, but I like the current DE model range, with the two exceptions of wyches and grotesques. That's not to say I wouldn't mind new models, but I mostly like the current ones.
3. I like the speed and I like the firepower. I've always chosen speed over armor, especially when I play any game involving piloting. Personally, that's also the way I spar, using speed and endurance over strength.
originally i liked the speed.
Then i realized we are not really the fastest or maybe not even the second fastest army anymore. these days even space marines can be fleeting around your deployment zone by turn 2.
the 2+ invulnerable save is real fun but we aren't even the best at that.
but i hang on to the DE.. i do it for the drugs.
"DE are crap! Noone plays them for a reason"
"Oh really?" *Buys battleforce and codex*
That and I really wanted a mech foce that isn't mounted in rhinos.
1: Because nobody I know plays them
2: They are called a connoisseur's army which takes long to master: I like a challenge
3: They are downright evil
4: Raider transports
Innovation suffuses this hobby like a tea bag in the boiling water of play.
"On a hunch, I melted them down and inhaled the fumes and read the dark eldar codex again, AND FOUND A BUNCH OF NEW RULES HIDDEN BEHIND THE OTHER WORDS..." [Gardeth on modelling & interpreting the DE Codex]
Well its a good thing Dark Eldar are so unpopular otherwise no one would play them :p
I do it for the evil. And I have been accused of only being good at 40k because I play orks.

i first started playing them because there was only 2 DE players in my area, and one of them sucked. So my other friend (we'll call him dean) was really good with them so he showed me some good moves. and out of about 15 matches i lost only 2 times.
and i love tearing up marines with my taloi
In order to entice into playing 40k, my friend offered me one of two armies he didn't play anymore. After hearing/reading the fluff and understanding the DE play style, I chose the DE and haven't looked back. I am one of two at the local store and love the look of confusion whenever I put my army on the table. To be quickly followed by horror as the DE might comes to bear.
