Welcome to Librarium Online!
Can Scourges use the WWP the turn they deepstrike? Also, can you then shoot with the other 4 Splinter Cannons or is the unit tied into the opening of the portal? Thirdly, what kind of package do you guys use for WWP in 5th now that our ICs can be targeted?
Page 95 in the BRB tells me that Deep Striking counts as movement and the rules for the portal activation in the Codex says that it is instead of moving or shooting that turn.
So no portal activation on the turn that you arrive, but can shoot.
As to tactics, I will leave this up to some one else.
In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.
A 9 strong raider squad including splintercannon, blaster and naked sybarite with portal.
A 14 ish strong warriors squad including naked sybarite with portal, 2 splintercannon and 2 blasters.
Both are cheap, resonably survivable and given the difference in movement means I can put a portal pretty much where I want.
I would use a raider squad (with screaming jets if the DeepStrike is the main part of the plan) as nobody recommend the scourges.
Basicaly You will have five warriors put in the middle of the table with their excellent save to remain to the next turn when Your reserve can come from the portal. With the raider and 9-10 warriors You have better chance to survive the enemy`s shooting phase. At least with the sybarite.
I was playing with the idea of a full scourge squad for long time, but I dropped it. I think raider squad is better in every way, even they have less heavy weapons, but there is the option for a disintegrator.
THE RULES: the 5th ed. rulebook sais, after DS You can shoot, the codex sais, You can activate the portal in the shooting phase instead of shooting (or moving- as we could fleet back in 3rd, 4th ed or run in 5th ed.). So You can DS, open the portal, but as it will happen in the shooting phase, You have to protect the portal to be reached for a turn: if enemy steps 1" You can not come out.
I would use like: moveing phase: raider moves, stop across to make cover, warriors disembark behind, heavy weapon members at side to give them LOS. Shooting phase: sybarite "shoot" the portal behind the squad, warriors shoot. Next turn survive, move forward, let the reserve come out.
thanks freman, that was my question, i thought the "movement" meant fleet/run but i wanted someone to confirm it.
The screaming raider sounds like a better idea and easier on on points. thanks!
The Screaming Raider is a very Bad Idea.
Here is why:
1. Your raider has to come in, say we are lucky, he comes in turn 2
Then you have to wait until turn 3 to disembark. Because of our codex rule we do not get a coversave(except we get a coversave by real cover) so no protection here
2. In round 3 we can get out of the raider and as I Interpret the WWP rules different i would have to wait until turn 4 to deploy the portal, so my reserves could come in in round 5. Wow...
if you play it that you can choose between not moving or not shooting you could bring in the rest of your army in round 4. but that would be the earliest.
and 3. the enemy has one full shootingfase to take out 1 or 2 raiders.
so i would go as The_Outsider does. One strong warrior Squad and 1 Raidersquad.
As much as I would like to do otherwise, I have to agree with the heavy weapons comparison.
Between the use of the word TURN, and the lack of any mention of "fleet" in the movement description, it seems unfortunately clear that the sit-around-then-use was intended.
Now, it really SHOULD be a faster thing to do. Maybe when and if we do get a new codex we'll also get a WWP that is as fast as the rest of the army is supposed to be.
thanks for the clarification. I heard that we will lose WWP in the next book whenever it comes in place of a newer different version. I like my original interpretation of the rules but it was too good to be true. thanks again
