So I haven't play tau very long, 2 matches with them (well there was one test match that I wont include because i hadn't even a HQ at the time). I thoroughly enjoy them.
Recently I purchased a load of 2nd hand models from a friend and after stripping the paint and some... extensive restoration I now have a respectable tau force. There is an event coming up in my area end of next month that requires 1750 points of painted models to participate in and I would like some peoples opinions on what to add into my list to stretch the points a little.
Here is what I currently have.
4 VX8 Crisis Suits
3 Stealth Suits
24 Fire Warriors
8 Gun Drones
2 Broadside Battlesuits
and a Hammerhead
before upgrades (compulsory or not) they come to around 880 points.
wargear approx 320pts bringing my total to around 1200 points atm.
where do you recommend I take them from here, If it helps my previous army is Eldar and my friends play Orks, IG and Black Templars.
Any help appreciated
Shield Drones.. Your Battlesuits will love you for it.
Another hammerhead convertable to an ion head. If you get the sky ray box you can make all of them. Devilfish/hammer/ion & sky...
and some more pathfinders if you wish to use markerlights... and you do

Necrons - 6000 points, Tau - 6000, Daemons - 5250, Eldar - 4500, Blood Angels - 5000

From what I have learned of Tau so far, I agree with deco.
A second Hammerhead seems to be almost universal at 1500+ points. If a third HS is taken, it seems to be either Broadsides or a Skyray.
3 more Pathfinders would definitely be a wise investment.
Shield Drones for the Braodsides you have will help.
Another Devilfish. One for a FW team and the the one you have for your Pathfinders. (Which will load up your other FW team on turn 1. )
Also, a second Shas'el wouldn't hurt.
Arvan'drynn Craftworld - 15,000pts (deceased)
Tau - 2,000 points (atomized while on patrol)
- Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.
As a beginner with Tau myself, I highly recommend expanding your stealth suit team. They have a decent rate of fire, survivability, and their leader can carry a markerlight if you need.
A 3-man Pathfinder squad is illegal, so you need at least one more of them before you do anything with the squad. You can purchase Shas'ui Team Leaders in blister packs; some of them come with a Shield Drone, which would be useful for your Broadside unit.
Other than that I would be looking at a second Hammerhead (buy Sky Ray box, as has already been said) and a couple more XV8s. They will allow you to field 3-man teams, or take a 2nd commander and run a 3-man and a 2-man team, or create a Commander + Bodyguard (although that usually isn't recommended).
What playstyle do you anticipate using?
"Tau Commandment #226: Participants who use Velocity Trackers in the Tau Clay Pigeon Tournament will be disqualified"
So a Skyray box right? do I require buying the hammerhead weapon sprue separate or should it come in the box as well?
Shield Drones, you can't buy these separate right? come with the XV8's and shas'ui?
Pathfinder to make them legal (and for some of those tasty markerlights my friends will soon come to hate)
A Devilfish and another HQ?Well the lore I have crafted for my sept specializes in deep strikes so i could do with fielding that pathfinder squad for the scatter dice re roll. I usually keep a few suits in reserves for deep striking.Originally Posted by eiglepulper
I would aim for the biggest squad first (or most threatening vehicle) and attempt to take them down to the best of my ability, then I would attempt to avoid combat with the suits that are most likely deep striked ahead of the army. I have mostly fought Black Templars with them and I have been focussing on equipping the suits with Plasma rifles and meltas/missile pods for slicing through armor saves, but i suspect that the next few armies I face will be Orks or IG (so a nice submunition round or 2 would be pleasing)
Should i get the TL: PR upgrade on the Broadsides or would the SMS be better? What is the movement on a Tank, skimmer?

Hmmm you have a decent amount there, I would add the following:
1. 5 more Pathfinders to fill out your squad (or you could experiment with 3 rail PFs too), this will give you the cheapest possible way to get a bunch of markerlights. Probably a good thing to play around with in a Tau army ...
2. Like everyone else said, shield drones are necessary for your Broadsides. 2 of each for every Broadside will help make up for their lack of mobility
3. Maybe a Piranha to use as a expendable distraction to fly up your enemies flank? If your bold with one of these it may distract your enemy enough to let you pummel his armor with the broadsides and hammerhead. Who knows if your lucky u may even take out a transport or artillery or something with it as well. Take fusion blasters on it if youre feeling REALLY bold heheh.
4. I may suggest another Broadside or Hammerhead/Ionhead/Skyray too? You'll have plenty of anti armor with one more of any of those. If I had to choose, I would probably go with another skimmer tank though, cause they are nice and mobile. Make sure you put a multitracker and disruption on it if you do get one... they are mandatory.
You definately dont need more Troop choices, your good there. In fact you may want another Devilfish for all those troops...
I would stay away from the following units: Vespid (fast but too pricey), Ethereals (penalty is too great)
I have an ethereal but i did not quote it because i will never use him, both stats and because of my lore.
Does the Skyray box contains the hammerhead sprue?
best way to obtain shield drones?
