I just recently started Necrons, I bought the following models from a friend: An orb lord, a destroyer lord, 23 warriors, 7 scarab bases, and 3 destroyers. I played my first game with them, which was doubly interesting because I started 40k on Daemons, so deploying and shooting were basically whole new frontiers for me. Anyway, I'm having trouble deciding what to get next, and I was helping all of you friendly folk could help me choose?
The warp scum is trying to infiltrate us, take him down
Some more warriors is always nice. A thumb rule is that you should field at least 10 warriors per 500 pts. If wou like the destroyers, get some more. You should always field at least 2 identical units if it has the necron rule IMO. And go get what you like to look at the most, no unit in our codex are actually bad. The unit wich is hardest to use is the pharias, so think twice about them. And spyders rock. Read the tactica on them, you can find a link to it in the necron index.
So, first off: More warriors. 50 warriors should do the job if you want to play big games. Then, do as you please. If you like the look of the monolith, go for one. If you think destroyers is nice, get more. Then, tomb spyders are good for flexibility. And buy what you please, but don't give up after playing with one unit of something. If you can convince your opponent, proxy the model before buying it. With scarab bases, you can proxy wraiths to see if they are alright. And destroyers can be both Heavy Destroyers and tomb spyders. The warriors should be able to play as immortals and flayed ones. There should be a tutorial about how to convert warriors into flayed ones and immortals somewhere around here.
And welcome to our ranks of cold, heartless robots.
Monolith or more destroyers
I'd fill out the big hitters of your army first before moving on. Grab a few more destroyers, and a pair of tomb spyders. Otherwise you could grab a monolith or Immortals. The primary goal at this point is to round out your shooting, get anti-combat options and survivability. Tomb spyder fills out survivability and anti-combat, monolith rounds up shooting and survivability, and destroyers crank shooting.
Many of us have discovered that 2 squads of 3 destroyers is most effective, so try and shoot for that if you like destroyers.
I'll echo what the others have said. Specifically I would get 7 warriors and 3 destroyers to start off. This will allow you 3 units of warriors and 2 units of destroyers. The next purchase would be 5 immortals or a Monolith.
Warriors are a good option because they are pretty cheap, include scarabs, and can be converted into other units without too much work. Plus it never hurts to have more of them.
