I'm converting my tau army into a mechanised list and I was wondering if it would be better to get a skyray or a second hammerhead.
Currently I have:
4 Crysis suits
5 stealth Suits
1 Devilfish(I will be picking up a second one)
14 kroot, 2 hounds and a shaper
and a whole truckload of drones.
I am planning on phasing out the broadside for a second tank
1 Broadside is no good. You need full squads of 3 to realize their potential.
That being said, buy a skyray because it comes with all bits to make the hammerhead and skyray.
Thanks. thats funny about the bits. I was just wondering why they didnt just package the hammerhead/skyray/devilfish in the same box
i have had a lot of succes with just one broadside (using 2 shield drones) more than makes its points in every game - usually get over 3 times its points.
Skyray is good but then you need lots of pathfinders to get the markerlights on
I've had success with one broadside too, however its just not mobile enough for the army I want to make.
In my list I use two Hammerheads and a Skyray, this is a very nice combination as the Skyray can boost both the Hammerheads BS and it has 6 STR8 missiles of its own. I would go for the Skyray box whatever you do.
see on that note i would have had other units take care of the nob biker unit - but one broadside with 2 shield drones in cover (mine is usually placed on the top of a building) and that unit wouldn't have been able to kill it - they tend to take one or 2 shield drones but then they would have been destroyed as i hold my hammerhead next to in on the table (between the 2 they can see the whole field) and usually hold some FW or a BS around the area to protect them if needed.
I like skyrays just make sure you have enough markerlights - i have fielded 14 seekers in one game and only used 8 of them as my pathfinders veh got hit early and had bad luck with the role to hits.
Also Shield Drones do not work that well in CC (which is where the XV88's died) you cannot allocate wounds to them that are inflicted on the XV88's.
I much prefer Hammerheads in 5th. If I were you (OP) I would buy the Skyray box and use the Hammerhead. In larger points lists I would go for the 2 HH and 1 Skyray or 2 HH and a 2 XV88 unit (XV88's do work best with 2 HH in larger lists).

thats why i always field the broadsides where they will never get into CC - yes i hold them back because there is no need to go forward their main weapon can hit almost everything on the table if positioned well - and we play on the propper table by GW with some of their buildings on it.
Only once have i every had braods get into CC and that was on the very last turn when i used it to block off an attacking troop unit to stop then contesting one point - that move lead to a win.
Yes i agree i have pushed my hammerheads out but not until mid way through the game and in larger games which i play i have always faced armies with a number of units which can take it, with most of them being CC units i do hold it back and do what tau do - hit as hard as you can before they reach you. - if i played IG i would change that tactic tho
No i haven't - i have had the anoyance of choppers bnut not the bikes. - but still my broad would not get in CC with them.
I do play a defencive game and then push in the second half by holding my side and flanking them. Means a close game but i like it like that - but then it depends on game type.
Thanks for the advice. I've decided to field 2 hammerheads and then throw in a skyray if the games point size allows for it.
