Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have just recently decided to switch all my leaping gaunts in my army to death gaunts. I did this because I did not want to have SOOOOOO many gaunts because it always turned out that I didnt have a target for all of my gaunts to charge so they would just stand around, and I dont want to push around THAT many figures.
So what do you guys think of death gaunts?
As most people here will tell you, and that is my oppinion as well, gaunts need to be cheap, anything over 10pts makes them rather expensive and uneffectiv. Well, your problem seems that you have to few targets in range for your gaunts ... that somehow happens seldom to me, remeber, you need only to get one model in b2b contact with the enemy, the rest just need to be in 3" of that model ... so its quite possible to get a whole lot of gaunts into one CC. Maybe one option for you could be to make heavy use of genstealers. I have seen quite effectiv Tyranid forces with not a single gaunt, but stealers as the rank and file troups. They are tougher, much more dangerous and a lot fewer then gaunts, and devenitely better then deathgaunts. Maybe give it a try?
I've been using deathgaunts for a while, and I've found them to be extremely effective, at least against SMurfs and 'crons. Wounding on a 4+ instead of a 5+ more than makes up for the fact that I have one or two fewer gaunts per squad
Ive used deathgaunts before and I think they are quite good, the improved roll to wound can be very useful and they only cost one more point than my usual ST leapers (which are Init+1 leaping ST gaunts)

I prefer to use hormagants with initative 5.
You can think i´m a very stragne nid plaer, but i usually play vs dark eldar, eldar and SM. I think the I5 is very effective in this situation.
vmgf1979, not at all... I myself prefer the AdrG I Leaping Gaunts. The one who strikes first, gets a chance to kill first, and against Eldar/DarkE You get to strike at the same time which is immensely useful.
However Deathgaunts do have their uses, against Orks and Necrons they are usually rather effective.
"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
I also used to think that cheap was better when it came to gaunts, but I experimented w. a str+1 in+1 ws3 w. bio-plasma, talons & leaping, and haven't had cause to complain. Sure they're the cost of a basic stealer, and die at range easier, but against any army an initiative 10 str5 cc attack is invaluable. 3 Wraithlords, 2 Killa Kans, 3 Daemon princes, a Talos and a Malefactor all have fallen before the onslaught. Wyches & 'stealers hate them too. Basic marines & termies make them ineffective on a 1 to 1 basis, but they still screen w. cc so the rest can get there.
