Welcome to Librarium Online!
title says it all. what do you do against a heavy tank army? our extreme lack of reliable ranged penetration is really blatent due to venom cannons being unable to penetrate. barbed stranglers are great against light armor but against anything 13+ it gets pretty bad.
i just recently started playing nids (main army is eldar) and the ability to deal with infantry is so much easier with nids, but tanks have become a real concern for me. Carnifexes are obviously going to take one out in melee, but it has to get to the tank and survive first.
i can see lictors being potentially awesome tank busters, but if they fail to do it on their deep strike turn, they are immediately going to die.
zoanthropes obviously can do the job, but that 18 inch range means they will be shot to pieces en-route if the player is smart enough to realize its our best tank buster.
so do we have any reliable method to do the job? how do you deal with it?
Well, I just bring all of the mentioned weapons. Really! A Tyranid army is best played with a multiple threat strategy. Every unit should join its force to try and bring down a vehicle, either by cornering it or mass shooting.
I usually have 2 fex (VC+BS, VC+ST), 2-3 Zoans (WarpBlast), 1 Lictor and 1-2 Hive Tyrants (one winged, the other on foot with either VC or Warp Blast). With that kind of setup the amount of firepower and monstrous creatures will bring tank down. This is probably not the solution you wished for but I don't see any other way.
The only thing you did not mentioned is the use of stealers and hormagaunts (with toxin sacs). A big squad of hormagaunts can probably glanced to death any vehicles with AV10 in the rear. Stealers can also do the same thing but with a better efficiency. The problem is getting them in CC but that's where 12" assault move and outflanking comes into play.
Sniperfexes to stop the tanks. MC or stealer charges to destroy them. That's pretty much all I've ever needed.
I just don't get it.
I read similiar threads like this all the time, and it just boggles me that people can have trouble with tanks as tyranids.
Anything that flys, outflanks, deepstrikes, is an mc, and/or has rending.
Thats like.... 80% of the codex choices....
Ditch the VC's, run up there, and eat them.
Well I in the last month have fought two imperial tank armies. One was very hard the other was well imperial guardsmens taste good. I found that running a close combat flyrant talons and rending claws works well against tanks. destroy one hit the next. Also raveners work well agianst sentinals. I also employ a slow moving carnifex with talons and crushing claws. a reminance of old one eye, Works well tearing apart leman russ tanks aswell as taking apart land raider's. I have also used homogaunts as listed above to beat the rivits out of the armor on light tanks and transports aswell. and I too have used zanathrope's on the tanks too they work wonders. But the best one I have found to use is a flyrant close combat weapons. I only sugguest in a tank heavy army you run hard and fast across the field to keep from losing too many bugs. for the most part once you in close to there ranks you are the master not them. And for each tank you break open there is nice crunchy treats inside to eat.
Personally I've had no trouble with tanks, I field superfexes, which survive rather easily until getting in charge range (preferably running the whole way, my BS never hits ><) and at that point tear the vehicle to pieces. Genestealers have been, marginally effective, and shooting has been nigh pointless to take down tanks. Granted I refuse to use shooting fexes or tyrants (which I foresee also doing very well).
Sniperfexes as I came into (begrudgingly at first) realization is that they are effective at three things:
1) They are decent at anti-personnel. The Venom Cannon is great at landing insta-kills on failed MEQ saves (being able to fell a Nob in one hit). Even the Barbed Strangler can do the same with its high strength, big blast, and the ability to pin soldiers and pen armor. Thus, it denies shooting back at your forces through elimination of models or the fact the squad could be entirely pinned.
2) They are great at stalling out armor. While the Venom Cannon can't pen non open-topped vehicles, they will almost always at least prevent them from shooting at your troops from a Shaken or Stunned result. This can be huge when you consider you have a 50% chance to deny a Land Raider from unloading into your brood...or arguably worse...a Vindicator. But, the Barbed Strangler can pen and still has a chance of glancing a Land Raider. And in the best worst case of drifting, it will bounce off the hull and into a close by squad of troops (perhaps killing or pinning them).
3) They draw fire! For as arguably effective as they are, you should take note as to what the first or second target of your army is against your enemy. They will go for those 'Fexes off the bat with the heavy weapons which means you get control of the battlefield. You can't buy that kind of control on the field (let's disregard Eldrad and The Deceiver haha). You will know what your enemy will target and that is a huge advantage.
Human beings, while exceptional in the ability to learn from the mistakes of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to...
