Does this affect the whole unit, or just the model itself?
And if a unit is Fearless, does Horror/Terrorfex still affect the unit?

Nope as fearless models auotmatically pass any morale and pinning tests they are required to make. And if a unit is Fearless, does Horror/Terrorfex still affect the unit?
Please note fearless models are still subject to normal LD tests (which I think the hell mask uses, but i'm not sure so i'm not giving a definitive answer).
What I meant with the first question was whether the opposing unit or just the models specifically attacking MY model with Hell Mask are actually affected by it. Just a clarification .
I take it that the Hell Mask only effects the "Independent Character" that it is bought for and not the squad he is in. If he is attached to a squad then it has no effect because you use the rules for the majority of the squad.
GW DE FAQ:
Q. What do hellmasks do when given to nonindependent
A. They serve no function when given to nonindependent
DE.14L.01 – Q: If an Independent Character with a
Hell Mask has a retinue what, if anything, does the
Hell Mask do?
A: While the retinue remains alive, the Hell Mask has no
Eyes without life, maggot-ridden corpses, mountains of skulls.
These are some of my favourite things.

To sum up all the thoughts posted so far in a more coherent way:
The Mask would only affect the Independent Character (like an Archon, Archite, etc.,) and not the squad he/she is attached to. Any attacks directed at the IC has to be declared and that enemy model attempting to hit the IC will have to roll their leadership.
The Mask would not work on a Character (a squad upgrade like a Sybarite or Succubus) because the enemy can not single out squad characters in close combat – there is no way to figure it out needs to roll a “6”.
Same goes for the IC that has a retinue – the IC can not be picked out in close combat so there is no way to know who needs to roll a “6”.
Personally, I say drop the mask idea and invest in the trophy rack. It’s practically guaranteed to be activated and believe it or not you will eventually need to make leadership rolls.

make a ld test?
never! that would involve losing a combat!
Actually they would be useful on my wyches just thinking about it. every so often my wyches just capitulate, do no wounds and take 1 in return therefore losing. Then filing their test and running...
Actually trophy racks aren't going to help much with that are they?
Kwi is correct about the hell mask.
Oh how we wish it were more effective...
could be combined a little bit with the trophy racks on a raider for a nice -1ld modifier. I wouldn't advise tis as it makes for an expensive raider, but hey, you could.
Dear Game Developer,Caps-Lock, its like cruise-control for AWESOMENESS!

My wych succubus and archon never leave home without a trophy rack - it has saved me more times than I care to count.
So the effect is for the wearer only and the only 'wearer' that can qualify here is an Independant Character (as mentioned.)
I was under the impression that all masks apart from the 'Mask of the Damned' are an individual benefit item only.
