I wish to add a "Monat" suit, for my smaller games.
As my sig states, my selections are named after the characters on NCIS. This "Monat" will be named, Shepard, and I want the suit to be within the "last stand" aspect.
The team is of one suit, upgraded to a shas'vre, so I can have a HWDC with two gun drones. My problem is to what weapons/support to choose.
I want to lean towards an anti-troop suit. Used for hunting units which hang around the back ( like farseers ), harass a flank, and to make that "last stand" for the Greater Good ( holding up an advance to buy me time ).
Would it be worth the points to "bond", a suit team, of a single shas'vre?
As my force grows, this suit will be accompanied by one or two other suits and will be armed with a failsafe detonator...
All opinions/suggestions/comments welcome.
You are also free to make comments on my "mental" state...

You can never ever go wrong with a fireknife: plasma rifle, missile pod. As a monat, take a team leader, fill the 3rd hardpoint with a targeting array and then also take a hard-wired multi-tracker.
If you're saving points, perhaps consider deathrain: twin-linked missile pod, flamer, targeting array, team leader, hard-wired multi-tracker.
If this guy is to be truly "last stand", make that a single missile pod and a twin-linked flamer instead.
There's pretty much no point in bonding knives unless you're adding suits to the unit, and then pretty much only if you've got 3 suits.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

I take a fireknife monat like #6 has outlined, very versatile and reliable.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
The Flamer will deal with most standard troops (especially Eldar) and also importantly ignores cover saves.
If you are not bothered about cost then you can go for the Vre with twin linked Flamer, AFP, Multi, HW Drone controller and Gun Drone for 71pts. The AFP is a nice weapon that also ignores cover saves. However you have to judge whether the extra 30pts is worth the investment.
You mention the Failsafe detonator and my advice is this 'forget it' have you actually seen the rules for this thing.
(1) The XV8 has to be part of a team
(2)The team has to have lost an assault and be making a fall back move
(3) The model with the FD is removed as a casualty
(4) While the weapon may well be high strength it has no AP value which means the target unit always gets an armour save
You seriously never want any XV8 team in close combat if you can avoid it. XV8's are ranged attack units and even when using the flamer equipped units you should always be co-coordinating the use of the unit with other Tau units to make sure you inflict enough damage to avoid return fire or an assault.
If you want to have a Monat that will handle pretty much anything at any range then do as number6 advises and use a Firknife team leader with MP, PL, TA and HW multi. This is the ONLY Fireknife worth taking in the elite slot.
If however you want an effective anti troop XV8 unit then I would advise the unit I am using in my 2000pt list:
1 x Vre with twin linked Flamer, Airbursting Fragmentation projector, HW Multi, HW Drone controller and Gun Drone
2 x XV8's with twin linked Flamers, Drone controller with Gun Drone
Cheap enough but insanely good at taking down troops. Anything with 5+ armour or worse is burnt toast, anything with 4+ armour is well done but not quite burnt toast and other units with 3+ saves are slightly underdone toast. Seriously this unit hurts infantry has a decent chance to pin with the two Gun drones and has some casualty absorbing ability. If you are not confident about avoiding damage then give the unit a Bonding knife.
Forget the suicidal last stand aspect (are not aspects Eldar territory) and the Failsafe, XV8's are way to valuable to throw away in CC or as suicide units.

Considering you are naming the unit "Shepherd" after the fromer NCIS director, the up close and personal TL flamers or AFB doesn't really seem to suit the character. (If that is what you are going for).
I would go for something that seems to pull the strings from a distance.....or like has already been said, XV8 team leader MP, PR, TA HWMT. Seems more in the mold of Shepherd. But hey, what's in a name.
I don't care what you say. I found a lightsaber in my garage and that makes me a Jedi
Thank you all for your replies.
Its truly alot to think about.
REP to all, if the dang site allows it! LOL!
PS - Riki, I just love your "Torch" unit. I have a third elite spot, screaming to be used, and I hope you don't mind!
1 x team leader with twin linked Flamer, Airbursting Fragmentation projector, HW Multi, HW Drone controller and Gun Drone
2 x XV8's with twin linked Flamers, HW Drone controller with Gun Drone

Riki is right on the failsafe detonator. It is pretty much worthless. You have to lose a close combat, fail your leadership and then hope you actually win the initiative roll. With our awesome init this is almost something that will never happen. Even if it does, you lose the suit to go boom.
