nevermind this message. found answer in old post

This may be a stupid question but does a broodlord has to have a retinue?
p34 of the codex says: ... it shows the minimum and maximum unit size, and p36 broodlord brood: one broodlord AND a retinue...
All other races who have char with retinues can be taken without one (e.g. can take up to ...). So I'm not sure.

    Thanks all

You kind of awnserd it for yourself, yes he does have to take a retinue.

For fluff reasons more than anything else though, as a broodlord is always the first genestealer to arrive on a planet, it would be a bit odd if his vanguard of stealers didnt show up too.
