Welcome to Librarium Online!
hi im quite new to this site but im not new to tau, but has anyone relised that you have to take 2 squads of firewarriors as mandatory. they are the only +1 troops choice we have! ive been reading through many army lists and i see so many with only 1 squad of firewarriors and 2-3 units of kroot. now pg36 of the tau codex states firewarriors are +1 like i said, but on pg 37 this +1 for the kroot is not there, meaning that kroot DONT count towards your 2 mandatory troop choice's. now i might be wrong and if i am can someone provide evidence to prove me wrong (obviously without breaking any copyright laws) hope this brings a healthy debate starfire out-
+1 means you HAVE to take 1 unit of Firewarriors
all units in the troop section count towards the mandatory troops count. One of them simply HAS to be FWS.
Yes, you are wrong.
Kroot still count towards your minimum 2 troops choices, as there is nowhere in the codex that says otherwise. Whether it's 1+ or whatever is irrelevant. It's still taken as a regular troops choice and as such fills up a slot and is a scoring unit.
In the fire warriors entry, 1+ means you have to take at least 1 unit of fire warriors. This is described on page 24.
EDIT: Awww Zeev beat me to it.

ok i just read pg 24 and i cant see anywhere what you are describing (not calling you a liar im just probably blind lol) what im trying to say is that in the foc you have to have a minimum of 1 hq, this cant be an ethereal as it does not have the +1 next to it where as the xv8 commanders do, forward on to troops it says you have to take two troop choices minimum, so as fire warriors are the only troops with the +1 next to it it is there fore viable that you do indeed have to take two squads of firewarriors before you can take kroot, also remember that if you only had to make 1 choice then there would be minimum 1 squad marker next to it rather than +1 like it is at the moment, where as if they put +2 it would of looked like 1 squad took up 2 troops on the foc
That means you have to have ONE, then PLUS however many you can fit into the FOC is optional
You have to have ONE XV8 Shas'el or Shas'O
You have to have ONE unit of Firewarriors
Kroot are in the TROOPS section of the Codex and therefore COUNT as troops. If the didnt we could conceivably take 30 units of kroot and ignore the FOC. 1+ only means you have to take ONE in a army.
If a choice doesn't count towards its choosen section, it would say it as a last line in its description. This usually takes the form of a sentence in "bold" print, or sometimes it is outlined in a box. Chaos Hounds are a good example of this.
Fire Warriors are 1+ , as you must take one team as minimum.
If a unit has "0- ", it means you have a maximum on how many a force is allowed.
Kroot squads have no number, so you may take a number of squads. Their only limits come in how many types of Kroot in a squad.
You can always contact GW, or a GW store, if you want more proof.
Veteran players do pay attention to their codex. Tau is in its second edition, and personally I can't wait for the new one
Just in case the others were not clear enough, 1+ means that you are required to take ONE OR MORE of that selection.
In other words, AT LEAST ONE. It does not mean you need to take more than one.

thank you all for your replys, and the majority has swung it to " you only need 1unit of firewarriors" so everyone thanks again. this to me brings out another question, has anyone tried 1 min firewarrior max kroot list with any success?
Simply, you're reading it wrong. It's 1+, not +1.
