Hey guys. Just last night I played a 750pt game against my friend who plays 1k Sons. I had a ton of trouble dealing with his Defiler. In fact, I never touched it until the last turn, in which I immobilized it with my sniper fex's venom cannon. That wasn't even a victory because it didn't move at all. It just sat in the back and spat battlecannons at me the whole game, wiping out my gaunts and genestealers. So, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to counter a Defiler?
Winged Hive Tyrant jumping from hiding place to hiding place depending on the board.
Venom Cannons are probably your best bet, or infiltrate with a broodlord+retinue or some outflank with some scuttling genes.
Either way, just jump some 'zills from cover to cover and hit it or outflank with some genestealers. Or just stock up on a few more venom cannons and hope for the best.
And take advantage of the 4+ cover save and screen with some gaunts.

Then I am too!
Winged tyrant does seem like the best option to me. With good upgrades it can withstand the battle cannon shots therefore keeping your other minions alive longer. Ie warp field. I don't think anyone can ignore a winged tyrant. And if they do its om nom nom time hehe.
Outflanking one unit and the tyrant should be enough threat to get rid of that defiler. Battle cannon range sure is a killer. Really bad in dawn of war missions!
Okay, so it sounds like a general consensus that a winged tyrant should be used. I guess I should explain his entire list here and then tell you guys my ideas and you can critique.
Daemon prince with warptime and wings
2 squads of 1k sons, each sorcerer with doombolt
1 rhino for each squad
Defiler with reaper autocannon and extra ccw
I'm thinking of using:
2 broods of 3 warriors w/ enhanced senses, 2 deathspitters, and 1 venom cannon
Winged Tyrant w/ws adrenal gland, 2 scything talons, warp field
sniper fex w/barbed strangler, venom cannon, enhanced senses
(and maybe a dakka fex if I can fit the points in, which I doubt)
How does that sound? The Tyrant will rush up and try to reach the defiler before his daemon prince gets to it while the rest will advance behind with the fex shooting the prince to try and inflict some wounds before it inevitably fights my tyrant.
Personally I'd just use two sniperfexes. Why go to all the trouble trying to get to it when you can keep it shut down the whole game? I usually use my flyrant to cut through everything else.
I'd have to agree with TamCoan, 2 sniperfex's will do a better job at tackling the defiler than the hive tyrant, you really need the winged cc tyrant to deal with his DP and TS sqauds.
ive found a slightly obscure way of dealing with them, winged rippers. What they do is sneak up a flank and then line themselves infront of the defiler, blocking the line of sight. Alternatily just assault it. This will then mean that it unable to shoot you and you can deal with the rest of the force. The rippers are fearless so wont run off and are cheap enough to stall. If on a point budget leaping rippers work as well.
The Defiler shouldn't be your priority. The troops and DP are. It's easy to counter the Defiler. Just give your gaunts WoN, keep them in cover, and let him keep shooting them. Take out his DP and 1k Sons and when you do, then go after his Defiler.
This may be expensive, but also give your Flyrant AG Init so that he'll attack before the DP and Implant Attack so he'll kill the DP. If you give your flyrant AG WS, then you need to also give Toxic Miasma, otherwise, the WS7 DP will still hit you on 3's and you it on 4's.
Instead of getting a sniperfex, I'd try to get 2 dakkafexes (w/2 TL-D's) instead and concentrate on taking out his 1K sons' rhinos. After that, his 1k sons are vulnerable to your devourers. Also consider Extended Carapace for your fexes lest they succumb to his 1k sons' inferno boltguns.
In a 750 game, I'd go something like this:
Flyrant - AG(I), Flesh Hooks, Implant Attack, 2x ST's, Toxin Sacs, Warp Field, Wings - 197
1 brood of 4 warriors w/enhanced senses, ST's, 3 deathspitters, and 1 venom cannon - 119
2x Dakkafexes - EC, ES, 2x TL-D's - 2x138
2x 7 Spinegaunts - WoN - 2x56
1x 6 Spinegaunts - WoN - 48
(or make it 2x10 spinegaunts w/WoN)
That sounds really good jy, thanks.
Also, I think I forgot to mention this, but his defiler has daemonic possession so it is immune to shaken and stunned. Thus why my sniper fex didn't take it out of commission even after getting at least one glance nearly every turn.
You have a good idea too, Heirodule. Just one question though, how do you deal with the battle cannon dealing two wounds instead of one for every hit? Just make sure you're spread out?

if the defilers targeting the rippers, then its not firing on the harder units such as the warriors, stealers and fexs so its all good. just keep synapse nearby and it should be ok. spreading out cant hurt either though
By the way JY2 minimum squad size is 8 so that might need re-doing.
