Hello again servants of the Star Gods!
This week is a counter-unit topic, thanks to visseking for the idea!
Close combat is generally something one has to worry about only if the opponents units have some speed, so normally outside jump-packs and deepstrikers, there's not a whole lot to worry about. Until the other guy starts busting out the rhinos. Transports grant armies something that Necrons don't really get, and that's army wide-mobility. True monoliths can teleport, but it's absurdly cost restrictive to try and do so, also monos are SLOWER than out actual troops these days. So in a race to the objective, Necrons end up having to footslog, where as almost every other army gets to sit in their rolling coffin and ride luxuriously to the objectives before us. Also, those khorne berserkers and terminators sure get into our lines quick with a metal box to ride in, and that's not a comforting thought.
So folks, what's your take and response to dealing with transports? What units do you like to take them out with, and what tactics do you use to negate their greater mobility over the Necron force?
Personally I'll use my destroyers to crack them open then unleash everything else within range against them. Two or 3 units of warriors outside rapid fire range are usually enough even if my Destroyers have higher priority targets.
Ocassionally I'll use scarabs to do it if theres some good CC troops inside, pray they get a wrecked result and then surround the vehicle making the squad inside be removed before they even have a chance to disembark.
Whip, D. Lord, Pariahs and destroyers
If you are lucky, you could crack the chimera open with destroyers. The whip is nice, but you have to be lucky on the damage chart. Pariah is not a good solution in my opinion. They cannot reach the tank before it's too late. The destroyer lord is nice.
For crying out loud, we might be a little bit better against AV 14 with our guass flayers than a marine combat squad with a rocket launcher, but against anything else the RL marine has a better chance to stop it. Same goes for guardsmen troop choices. And both eldar and tau has got specialised units to take care of tanks. And here we are now, together with the tyranids, without a real chance to reliably kill any vehicle. Because of glancing.
As i mentioned in the other post, we have the same chance to kill a wartrukk with guass flayers now, as killing a land raider in 4th.
And that's all because of that GW probably wanted to make it easier to remember what to do when you shoot at a vehicle. They repaired something that in my opinion wasn't broken, i tought it was fun to cause an annihilated result.
The tactic that i've found, is to shoot at the enemy vehicle, look as nothing/something happens and watching my troops getting slaughtered by guardsmen in close combat. Of course they rise again, but i don't like to watch my troops getting slaughtered.
The monolith is good for offering some kind of mobility. Having it camping on an objective just outside the phalanx might be useful sometimes...
Hit side armor on the chimeras with a destroyer, you'll sing a different tune (go go penetrating hits!) really I think this is true of just about every transport.(ok not wave-serpents and valkries) Unfortunately unlike tanks, a "crew shaken" is not as effective against vehicles, as their purpose is movement, so immobilization is the only way to stop them (unless the opponent is cheap and doesn't take extra armor upgrades). Really at range destroyers are your best bet. Immortals are good if you want to mass-fire glance them from a relatively safe distance though as well. (and immortals can kill side/front armor on some of the transports). Alternatively Pariahs could provide this sort of fire.
i just unleash my destroyers on any light vehicle and they wont see the next daylight or just put my monolith in the way.
My Tomb Kings Project
As mentioned above, and I also use wraiths to kill some transports. Also scarrabs can be realy dangerous with disruption field. If you surround the transport and then wreck it with enough hits, all that was in it is destroyed instantly (great on landraiders with terminators ^^ )
