I'm toying with the idea of two winged tyrants and three zoanthropes all with psychic scream.., if they win close combat, (a likely scenario) then they count as a total of 26 models, so outnumbering by 4:1 is very likely. With the psychic screams stacked up, that's a whopping -9 to morale, or at the very least, -5 to morale.
My question is, do the tyrants get to roll 3D6 for pursuit? I'm pretty sure that since they aren't attached to any unit, and they operate independently, each tyrant and zoanthrope gets a pursuit roll, right? At the very least, there's a very good chance that they'll catch up and wipe out the squad, before moving to the next... and against fearless armies, there's those automatic wounds in 4th edition.
As far as movement is concerned, even thought the tyrants will be, on average, a foot or so away from the 'thropes, the range for psychic scream is 12''. Plus, once the zoanthropes catch up, they don't even have to be in close combat. The fact that they don't have warpblast might also make them less of a target. I figure the strategy would work best in a fairly large army with many additional threats, (i.e. 2 carnifexes and a load of guants), but the tyrants should survive long enough to wipe out a couple of squads, (since they'd probably only need to be in close combat for about a turn per squad).
Wow, that is a really good idea with the pychic scream ability. The only problem is this would be hard to accomplish and you have to be careful that your thropes don't die (watch out for lascannons). The number of points used for this tactic would be 147 just for the zoanthropes alone! In my oppinion that is way too many points and the points would be better invested elsewhere, but I can see this tactic really working out.
You call those cheap implants boobs?
They aren't boobs, they're lies!
If my opponent wants to waste his lascannon (or other ap2) shots on the zoanthropes, that's fine with me, since each kill only nullifies one psychic scream, and it's one less wound on my tyrants/fexes, or one less splattered warrior. Most people take 2 tyrants anyway, I figure if they assault together, (or within 12'' of each other) then they get the benefit of the overlapping psychic screams. The only real investments are 147 points for the 'thropes, and 30 points for the psychic scream powers.
So my question is, would it be worth 177 points and a heavy support slot for this "shock assault" tactic? It would make the tyrants that much more lethal, and combined with 75-80 gaunts and 2 'fexes, (and maybe some warriors and leaping rippers to keep things interesting) it could be really nasty. The 'thropes would be effective even behind cover, (since their psychic scream ability doesn't need LOS) and could even be used to support the gaunts, 'fexes, (if they ever reach h2h) and other nasties. The warriors psychic scream ability can also effect stuff outside of their own h2h zone...
I was wandering about the same thing over a month. I will play test this strategy, but with few changes. Only one zoanthrope has psychic scream and only one of my tyrants has wings. But I think that -3 to all ld. rolls is quite enough.Do You mean warriors can have psychic scream? The warriors psychic scream ability can also effect stuff outside of their own h2h zone...
I think that they can't have any psychic abilities besides synapse.
Green Tide will consume You all!
they can't only tyrant and thropes can have extra psychic powers
though I think it is a waste of not having those extra 3 warpblast for the thropes
I meant zoanthropes, not warriors - brainfart, that.
I don't know if it's a waste to use psychic scream instead of warpblast... a -9 to leadership, (in otherwords, a guarantee for fallback, pretty much) along with anywhere from 2 to 5 separate purusit rolls means a wiped out necron squad with no WBB roll, a destroyed space marine squad with no additional fighting, etc.
the zoanthropes, on the other hand, will hit with 1.5 warpblasts, on average, and against most opponents, will kill between 3 and 5 units altogether
I'm going to playtest the psychic scream thing against necrons on thursday, for which this strategy was specifically thought up - I want to see if "zoanthropes with warp blast" is the only way to go against those guys
Also, this will be a nasty way of dealing with enemy Psykers... Whopping minuses to Ld, and all failed Psychic Tests attract Perils of the Warp.
And what some of You may not know, PotW is rather nastier in 4thEd. Much more likely to Wound (fixed Strength stat), and no saves allowed! However, I'm not 100% sure about Inv saves... Should go and take another look at the 4thEd rulebook. But if this indeed is the case, then opposing Psykers might very easily end up killing themselves if they risk using Psychic Powers while within range of Psychic Screamers!
"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
well at least both of my tyrants are equipped with it
But don't forget, with 4th ed, and the LD required to shoot at other targets, it might just make your tyrants the new bullet magnet. Maybe you could use a large brood of 'goyles to make them shoot at those instead .
"Can you put that in a memo and title it '***** I already know!'"
Church: "Ok, so we're agreed? You first!"
Sarge: "Get on with it, Griff."
Griff: "I'd just like everyone to know: that I suck."
Griff: "And that I'm a girl..."
Church: "What else?"
Griff: "And I like ribbons in my hair, and I want to kiss all the boys."
Sarge: "This has to be the best surrender of all time."
My tyrants as the new bullet magnets? And what were they before, exactly?
Seriously, though, they've always attracted fire... lots of fire. And in the new rules, I believe troops don't need to take a leadership test to fire at TMC. If they did, though, I'm sure the -5 to leadership might have some sort of effect
