Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi, a few friends of mine at my local hobby club decided to do a campaign where you start an army at 500 points and add 250 each week until we hit 1500 each.
Since I've always been a huge fan of Eldar Aspect warriors and drew the short straw so to speak, they all got armies they are at least familiar with , I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice on where to start with the army.
I was thinking of a couple of Dire Avenger squads and a Farseer to start then adding a squad of striking scorpions and a wraithlord over the next few weeks. Maybe some Fire Dragons for anti-tank and Vypers for speedy death?
I only understand 1 thing about Eldar. Psychic awesomeness, hence the farseer
Thanks in advance for any advice I get.
add to them some serpents for transport and some warlocks maybe (for that wraithlord-in a seer council or as leaders for some guardians squads)

500pts is pretty restrictive in Eldar lists, but I would recommend a decent sized squad (8-10 ) of Dire Avengers in a wave serpent (give it bright lances so you can deal with enemy armour, you're bound to find some smart-ass with a Leman Russ even at this pts level).
Then pick a cheap second troop choice, either a small squad of jet bikes or a min size squad of rangers.
Your HQ should be a Farseer, I'd give him either guide or doom and put him in the serpent with the avengers.
Then look what else you really want, you'll probably not have many pts left so a Vyper is probably a good bet, if you can really stretch the pts maybe look at some scorpions but I doubt you'll have that many to spare.
that sounds fun.
And youre right even at 500 pts, dont leave home without the farseer! Dire avengers for sure. Whether you want to mount them or not is your choice, most people on here will tell you to always mount them. I dont always because they are not prime targets, however at 500pts they probably will be. so the choice is yours. And hes right some punk will be taking some kind of heavy tank...thinking that at 500 pts most players wont take lascannons, lances..etc. so i dont know if they are going to let you alter the list as you expand in points? or if it is a strictly add n go type of thing.
jetbikes are always fun, however I dont get much use out of them in small groups...other than objective handling, which can be good at 500 pts....since ....ideally..youre opponent wont have many units either.
After the farsser,DA, and maybe jetbikes, im not sure ull have many points left. if you do. take a wave serpeant (for DA and farseer) or SS/banshees. You could always take guardians too, just dont expect too much out of them and you wont be too disappointed with them =)
Thanks for the help guys
The list can't be changed once picked and after seeing your advice and knowing how the Imperial Guard player in the little mini-tournament thinks I can definetly see a Leman Russ blasting its way around the tabletop, and I expect a vindicator as well.
With that said I've got a pretty good idea of the 500 point list;
Farseer, Spirit stones, doom, guide
5 Dire Avengers, no upgrades
9 Dire Avengers and Exarch, Bladestorm
5 Fire Dragons, no upgrades
5 Striking Scorpions, no upgrades
I thought that with a Tyranid player, Imperial Guard player, Space marine player and ork player going up against me the Striking scorpions were a good choice and the fire dragons are my anti-tank. I wanted a wraithlord but until I get a few more psykers on the table I don't like the chances of wraithsight... even a 1 in 6 chance means he'll probably stand around for at least 1 turn.
Now when I get more points I was going to put the fire dragons in a Wave serpent and give the SS an Exarch with Shadowstrike, maybe a couple of Guardian squads after that and finish up with a Wraithlord...

At 500 points taking two psychic powers is risky. That turns your HQ into a very expensive target, not to mention that the DA's don't have very much to gain from guide with their BS of 4. If you had a falcon, war walkers, or guardians guide is useful, but you don't stand to gain that much from having the bladestorm guided. Picking up maybe 4 or 5 shots doesn't justify the points for the spirit stones and guide, the benefit is even smaller for a normal salvo of DA fire.
While you are bringing a pretty high model count for 500 I think that you'd be better served bringing something that can tank shock and keep your toys safe from tank fire. Especially if you are going to be fighting IG, cause there is no way you can out gun them in 500 pts. They beat you on both range and model count and more than likely heavy weapon shots.
Imo, you'll be very lucky if your dragons get to shoot anything at all. Those are gonna be huge targets and they are only 5 toughness three wounds, put em in a transport or rethink when the dragons come into play.
I regards to fearing wraith sight, just keep him near your farseer. It's not as terrible a thing as you'd think. Swapping the scorpions out for the wraithlord isn't a terrible idea, or swapping the dragons out would also work.
Foot-slogging Dragons rarely do anything, except die when the opponent feels they are too close. Especially min squads.
I like Scorpions but without a Scorpion's Claw Exarch and infiltrate they ain't all that good except as a fire magnet. (A Wraithlord is a much better as a Fire Magnet this being said)
Use the fire dragon's points to boost the Scorpion to 6+ exarch and the rest to boost the small squad of DA? And i would choose Fortune over guide anyday, but that might be just me...
An alternative to Scorpions might be shadowseered Kisses Harlequins, with fortune on them they will be able to reach and survive (and slaughter) just about anything in any situations on 500 points, they do cost a fair bit, however. (160 for 5 if you throw in the fusion guns.)

500 points is a very tricky points level for Eldar indeed. If I were to go about this I'd probably start off with a core like this:
Farseer - 80
10 Dire Avengers - 137
10 Dire Avengers - 137
5 Warp Spiders - 127
---Dual Death Spinners
TOTAL - 481
This leaves you with 19 points to optimize whatever part of the list you feel is weak. There is no real cc in this list, which means you will have to rely on maneuvering to ensure that the opponent doesn't catch you. The Warp Spiders however, are mobile enough to get behind or to the side of any Leman Russes you might encounter, and are a very tactically flexible unit.

Take the fire dragons out, theres really no point in them at this level, its extremely unlikely that you'll be facing more than a single vehicle, certainly never more than two.
My favourite is to take a BL Serpent for my avengers to ride in and a Vyper with EML. The Vyper is decent at anti infantry with its template, but it can also be used to fly round the back and unleash its str 8 missile at the rear armour of enemy vehicles. I generally find that enough at 500. On top of that I take a small unit of bikes and a farseer with either guide or doom (NOT both).
