Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey all. I've got a problem. Tomb Spyders. I want a lot of them but I think the models are pretty boring (not to mention, quite expensive). They look too static, not like the floating mass of legs, arms, tentacles or claws I imagined them to be. Whenever I think of Tomb Spyders, I see them slowly floating up the field grabbing Necrons left and right, repairing them and placing them back, pumping out Scarabs and generally wreaking havoc with it's formiddable claws. In fact, I see them as something like this:
Has anyone converted more impressive Tomb Spyders? How would I go about converting something like this - I'm at a complete loss here. I can't just go around buying a ton of toys like these because that wouldn't be legal for GW games. Hrrrmmmm.
I admit that thing looks cool but I can't think of much you can do with a tomb spyder
Just a man.... with a chainsword.......
What you could do is cut their leg segments apart and GS them back into the positions you want to make them look more active. Alternatively you could get some Machiney parts from other kits and start just hobbling them on in dramatic poses. OR become super good with greenstuff.
I have been doing what Alzer has suggested, it takes some work but can look pretty good.
Advice: snap the legs off and pin them, you will just have to do it later anyway.
For the squiddy type spyder I would go get some guitar wire and then make some decisions as to how you will make the head and claws.
Just had an idea, what about the plastic stealth team heads for tau? They would be a good starting point and I imagine the closed in burst rifles would be useful in the conversion too.
Funny you should mention Stealth Suits - they were the first thing I tried. Unfortunately, they're a little too small. Perhaps I'll just remove the legs from the existing Tomb Spyder model and replace those with a mass of tentacles or claws - it's pretty well proportioned really, and is unmistakeably a Tomb Spyder. Destroyer chassis might also be an option, replacing the vents with arms and Necron body with a head in casing?
How small is too small? If you look at the second image you posted you can see a wedge shape with two half circles either side. (sort of anyway) If you took the stealth suit head then used say the rear end of the burst rifles you could form a similar shape for the head. Then build around that. For similarity of sizing to official spyders you could put 2 on a base (represents 2 wounds maybe?)
The more I talk about this the more I want to test fit one!
Am i the only one thinking that the legs on that thing would make awesome poseable tails for wraith?
What toy is that as well (ie what, where, how much?), cos that could be quite useful for conversions. Also some inspiration for cool spyders (using the current model can be found in Aus WD322 oct 06, sound like what your looking for, new heads, new posed legs & arms.
hope to be helpful!
