I know the carried unit can shoot all directions from an opentopped vehicle, but the weapons mounted on the vehicle, in what directions can they shoot? Are they hard-mounted so that they can only shoot straight ahead, or do they swivel? (specifically asking about the disentegrators and dark lances on a raider/ravager)
When does the Nightshield become useful? It seems that any of the weapons that can hurt our vehicles will be in range turn 2 if we move anyway. Most of the bigger guns will still be in range (lascannon, missile launcher, autocannon, etc) first turn without LoS blocking terrain anyway. The only weapons that the nightshield seems useful against is bolters, heavy bolters and firewarrior weapons (or other 24-36" weapons)
which brings me to my next topic? How do you usually deploy your raiders/ravagers? Since they are essentially made of paper and can be destroyed fairly easily if not protected, how do you shield them? It seems that there will be plenty of occasions where there won't be enough big terrain to block all LoS from that first turn barrage. Do you hide the ravagers? do you place troop carriers in the corners and try to keep them out of the way? Do you use one raider to block LoS for 2 or 3 others and shield them, hoping you can make your cover saves? I'd say this discussion belongs in a tactica, but since most of the tactica was written in 4th ed, I'm wondering how you guys have adapted strategies for 5th ed.?
I think more so then any other army you need to know ranges otherwise a 1" mistake could cost you the game. That being said Nightshields are great! In 5th people are taking more and more melta guns which the nightshields basically nerf.
If your opponent has lots of 36+ range stuff then sometimes I keep things in reserve if I am not going first. It really depends how many skimmers i have. If I have a ton then no need to be in reserve just let some of them die if you have to. Use the ones you do not care about as much to block your important skimmers that way you can get a cover save.
Above all else get Nightshields if the points allow they are godsend.

Raiders and Ravagers weapons are mounted on a ‘pin’ and are therefore ‘PINtle mounted,’ this gives you the starting point of a 360 degree arc of fire but they look like they could not swivel past the hull outline and over the vehicle itself (the gunners have absolutely no bearing here as there is no rule to cover them apart from giving a ballistic skill from the crew.)
So I believe that this gives you about 270 degrees on the front gun and about 200 degrees on the side guns ands makes it an impossibility for the left gun to be trained across the vehicle to the right side and vice a versa. But if the guns had their pintles mounted above the vehicle and so clear of any obstructions then it would be indeed a 360 degree view.
