In the ork codex under big mek It gives 2 listings, one for normal mek orks and one for a big mek orc. yet i cant find the cost of a normal mek... do these even exists and if so how are they fielded? as a big mek retenue? can they be given mech upgrades?
You can't take a mek or unit of meks on their own. They're an upgrade for loota and burna units. In any unit of lootas or burnas, you may replace up to 3 models with meks that either cost the same as the lootas/burnas if they have big shootas or kustom mega blastas, or 5 points more if they have rokkits.
They have all the normal statistics of boyz, the only differences being their weaponry, and their ability to fix vehicles.
For the most part, there are only two reasons I've seen to replace lootas or burnas with meks:
1. To get a unit of lootas up to 9 or 13 models, when you don't have enough loota models to do it. This is done because units of 9 and 13 are significantly less likely to panic than 8 and 12, respectively.
2. To give units of burnas more versatility, by adding either big shootas or kustom mega blastas to the unit. Adding 3 big shootas or 3 kustom mega blastas to a unit of burnas in a vehicle, is a great way to make them more versatile, and more useful. Also, if the vehicle they're inside is immobilized, the meks might be able to fix it.
"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
If I may cut in, I put a Mek with a Bigh Shoota with my Lootas, since they have similarity of weapons and that big shootas have a reliable Assault 3 instead of unreliable Assault D3. Meks should be good in transports, because of how helpful they are against the annoying vehcile damage rolls
