Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was doing myself a favor and creating a chart of basic units that I use a lot and I got to wondering if some of the upgrades are really worth it...
Specifically for instance, Dark Reapers. How often is his EML really going to help? You are giving up an extra shot for either +3 Str or a template and -1AP but the chance to pin, or the tempest launcher. I was thinking that I might rather just take Fast Shot for an extra 10 points if I had em, or just use the basic Reaper Launcher and Crack Shot.
Another one is Scorpion Claw. I really like the Biting Blade and with the amount of attacks the exarch gets, he can get up to a pretty solid Str with it, while still using his initiative to attack. With 5 attacks on the charge, he could potentially get up to Str 8 with a bit of luck and negate saves anyway. What are peoples experience and thoughts on that?
The other post for Banshee exarchs helped out.
Is there ANY reason to take the Fire Dragon exarch, ever?
Lastly, and completely on a tangent... The new battleforce for Eldar sucks. The old one is still for sale and provides as much or more use, as well as being cheaper...
I think it is better just not to take dark reapers at all. With Wraithlords, Warwalkers, Fire Prisms really no need to waste a lot points on MEQ killers and nothing much else.

There are two great reasons to take a fire dragon exarch
1. Fire pike
2. Tank hunter
The pike is an 18" assault melta weapon, thats stupidly powerful, it can almost guarantee popping anything from 9" away. Tank hunters is also great, it means on any penetrating hit from any model in the squad you will destroy the vehicle on a 3+.
There is a major debate to be had over the scorpion exarch, I personally favour the power claw, but the biting blade is an interesting weapon.
In my opinion, most of the sqauds get their power from the exarchs. Without them they do not excelt nearly as well.
SS exarch, the power claw is fun yes, the biting blade is fun too. Sometimes i take the blade over the claw and vise versa. also they dont seem to do well if you dont give them shadowstrike or a tranpo.
For the FD exarch i sometimes do not even field him, and if i do i never take tank hunters. I find it is quite ennough to have 5 fire drgaons shooting at a tank. The pike is a great weapon yes, but realistically, most people always target FD or avoid them. I havfe to put mine in tranport for them to make it to enemy tanks. and if thats the case, just drop em off close enough and have at it.
for banshees, ive learned that they can let you down if you do not A: have a doomed target, B: dont have enough attack dice. For these reasons i always give them a doomseer and almost always give her mirror swords. The xtra 2 dice is worth it. Also war shout isnt effective unless ur fighting low ld armies. the other one is good though, althought it is unlikely many people will charge banshees, too high of a risk.
I dont use spiders, hawks, or spears so i cant comment on my own personal experience.
for Darkreapers, your right , in my opinion, i never take the EML, either the tempest or the normal reaper launcher. Fast shot is good, but i prefer crack shot, 5th edition heavilyfavors cover saves, and rerolling dice is always fun.
As for DA, this can go both ways, if you are using the serpeant tactic, then 2 catapults and blade storm are fun, if they are foot slogging, i prefer pw /shield and defend, and sometimes bladestorm too. defend and pw/shield really give youa chance in CC with enemies. Also for some reason, lately, most my opponents have been "fearing" them. When all in all there not that powerful. So they attract alot of enemy attention, when really their attention should be on the harlequins or the 10banshees plus a doomseer heaving across the field.
These are just my personal experiences with these units. And that guy is right, i rarely ever take reapers now, they are super expensive, and prisms and falcons seem to get the job done. plus nothing is funner than fielding 3-4 tanks.
I don't know about the scorp exarch, the biting blade's only real advantage is striking in int order, the claw gets an extra attack (its a single handed weap, biting blade is 2 handed), guaranteed str 6 and crucially it ignores armour saves.
For MEQ armies you're definitely better off with the claw, for non MEQ armies, like guard or orks I might even consider the chain sabres over the BB, because of the extra attack and the rerolls.
doesnt the rule book state that if a unit has 1 powerfist and the other hand weapon is not a pwoer fist, that you do not get a bonus attack?
I thought it had a paragraph specically saying something about this.
Melta weapons do more damage to vehicles under half their max range, the rules are on p. 32
I know that Tankhunter is not really necessary, but it does make SURE you'll get the target, and its only 15pts, I agree its total ovekill if you're shooting down rhinos, but against land raiders or monoliths it really helps.

Tank hunters USR is nice, but fire pike is not so nice tbh ....3'' is not ussualy a problem.
The scorpion exarch and banshee exarch are very very useful. Stalker/Shadowstrike are important, as well as banshee weapons. Also the power weapons attacks are a nice addition to scorpions unit.
Dire avenger bladestorm is a must.
Shining spear without withdraw is not really a good idea (is anyone using these aspect warriors?).
The sunrifle is awesome for hawks exarch tbh and i like for myself skyleap power as well.
I also love the spinerret rifle for warp spider exarch. only 1 shot but ap1 is nice for light transport popping.
I absolutely love the dark reapers and their exarch with tempest launcher/crack shot ability. 2 plates taken as multiple barrage without cover saves, reroll to wound ap3? yes please....ah no LOS required for the exarch

Hight elf and Craftworld Eldar army project pics heavy: linky
Personally, I never bother with Fire Dragon Exarchs since I field 6 of them in a Wave Serpent and by the time the Exarch gets to shoot, the target is usually a pile of molten slag.
Banshees Exarchs with Mirrorswords are an excellent combo, extra dice that ignore armour saves? Bargain at 15 or so points - I never field 'shees without them.
Don't bother with Spiders or Hawks since they're not really worth their points to begin with and I'll stay out of the Scorpion Exarch debate say that I've always found that the Scorpions Claw works fairly well.
