Well anyone who played 4th Ed knows what a ridiculous upgrade these things used to be on your Fire Prisms. I've not played a proper sized game since then and want to get a proper indication of their general worth now.
All the opinions I've seen so far are either definately yes or definately no, but I'll add a sometimes choice too. Please if you choose this, state what you mean. This poll will help shape my future army list (which will definately have Fire Prisms)
Thanks for your time.
I can't speak on behalf of anyone else, because how they play is their choice, but in my experience (on Fire Prisms) it really depends on how you use your Fire Prisms. If you can manage to keep them out of LOS or range of AT guns, then you can probably get away without the Holo-Fields, as any result short of destruction or immobilized cripples your shooting for at least a turn anyways. However, if you can't keep them out of harm's way (mech guard flanking both sides for instance,) then the Holo-Fields are a worthy investment for the inevitable shooting that will occur. The Holo-Fields will also ensure that your opponent will have a very rough time removing a tank shocking Fire Prism off of an objective if it's gun gets blown off, or you need to contest and have nothing else to use.
Personally though, I always take Holo-Fields on my Fire Prisms in full point games (1500+), because I like the assurance that my main MEQ killers will still be alive when I need them most. The only time I don't take them, is when I can't afford them for the pair of Fire Prisms I take (such as in games of 1000points or so, although I stopped taking them in such low point games due to a lucky roll crippling the tank/gun meaning 3/4 of my armies firepower just went down the drain.)

holo fields 100% ive survived volleys of ork loota shotz, ork boys assaulting an immobilised falcon only creating cant move or shoot for all results....
they are extremely good and rarely will they woll a 5-6 or 6-6
i dont leave home without one
I usually say no unless there's 35 points floating around here and there - then I'll take them but it's very steep in terms of costs for a simple extra dice and using the lowest one in hte results table.

I went with sometimes, I used to be in the always camp but I've found that a bare bones prism still does ok and saves on points. If I can fit them in great but they are not auto includes anymore for me.
On fire prisms I'd say a sometimes, depending on what else that 35pts could buy you. On falcons I'd say always plus spirit stones: I need my fire dragons to get where I want them on time!
Ive always found that my holo-field rolls have been horrible. the second roll being either a mirror result of the first, or being worse >.<
So I just stopped bothering with holo-fields on prisms =[

I only add holofields if I can afford them on ALL my tanks along with spirit stones. While this is expensive I admit, It saves you from the one glancing hit crippling your beloved shiny quartz along with about 125 points ( if you took spirit stones )
All for now, got to go to bed.
Hope this helps
Fire Prisms don't need Holofields too often due to their long range.
