Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've flipped through the planet strike book and found several interesting things for nids in the new expansion. My personal favorite would be you can take 3 HQs, can you say 2 Hive Tyrant and Broodlord.
That aside can you see the nids really defending territory, they just devour and move on.
Nid's defending territory is possible. Rare, but possible. Maybe they're defending their hive or nests.
I hear you can take double the heavy slots or something like that. Imagine 9 carnifexes and 3 hive tyrants defending. Ooooohhhhhhh....nasty.
Maybe after a huge battle with imperial forces the nids won a Pyrrhic victory and the hiveship was on its final moments. So it disgorged its norn queen on the surface of the planet bellow and thus a continent scale hive might have emegrged. So when the imperials resume their attack the queen or queens are N01 target(Although if i was an imperial id call the iquisition to launch an exterminatus on the planet everything else exept the nids would be dead anyways).
Praise be to the Emperor!!
Hasn't there been something in recent fluff as well about Tyranids not completely devouring worlds? Something about the constanct: "Infiltrate, Invade, Wipe out the Defenders, Prepare to absorb all biomass, EXTERMINATUS" is cutting into the Tyranids absorption of biomass so they keep several planets 'alive' for a constant supply of biomass rather than a one-shot.
Actually, hell, that'd be one awesome scenario to play out in a fight.
The nids would defend the capillary towers feeding biomass to the hive ships until the planet is drained. Knocking out the towers would stall the nids from advancing to the next world so it kinda makes sense.
Nuking the whole site from orbit is the only way to be sure though hehe
Tyranids need to defend territory like every other army. Tyranids do destroy and move on but that is how a hive fleet behaves overall. The swarms on a planet will destroy all but they will guard their newly conquered territory so that it may be infested and exploited. They have nests to protect and other structures they use for absorbing biomass.
Also Tyranids at times won't get a choice in being attacked. The swarm could be massing for an assault when somebody launches a strike to attack it before it does. Things like territory need to be held once captured and Tyranids would do this like any army would so their enemies will try to take back the strategic city or the important plateau. Tyranids will evolve defences to stop these attacks.
There's a few pictures and some fluff in the new Planetstrike book that shows the Tyranid's defending their own area against Ultramarines. Anyone whose beaten Dawn of War II should be well versed in this.
I think the idea really is to use your imagination a little. For example, you could be playing out a scenario in which the Tyranids have just invaded a planet, knocked back most of the native life, and a company of marines have just launched a counter attack. Just because the defender chooses objectives, doesnt mean they have to be of particular use to them. One such building (occupied by Tyranids) could just be a stronghold of ammunition or something.
On a fluff note, I think it'd be more plausible for Tyranids to be defenders than Dark Eldar. In fact, DE have some sort of rule in their codex that says they are always the attackers...
If Google were a woman...I would so marry her.
Warning off topic quote contains DOW2 Spoillers
I dont take the Dawn of war 2 as a fluff case cause what tyranid army would stay back and allow a squad roughly of ten marines to go kill their critical creatures.
I mean they were all over the map and sitting there till you could got close.
Tyranids swarm their targets with rellentless masses they dont sit and eat pop corn!(guardsmen maybe)
Also i ve seen the nests but not a single norn queen(well that might have been a better final boss than a simple hive tyrant dubbed alpha)
On a final note when the virus hit em all should have died not only a few.
Praise be to the Emperor!!
Cool stuff people. All plausible scenarios, I can't wait to play them out. Personally I'm looking forward to having my Broodlord take the field again, I have a special set of old 3rd Ed genestealers that are his dedicated retinue. There is one defensive doctrine that can be taken that meshes well with a psychic choir army, you have to take a leadership test to assault the fortress, have fun doing so at -5 leadership, or more.
Anyways, Baltimore broodleader, out.
