Hello again servants of the Star Gods!
Alright folks, the next few weeks I've got a special theme set up. Welcome to Monster July. The next four weeks of topics will be devoted to Monstrous creatures and how to counter them with a Necron Army
Many armies out there have some sort of immense beast, machine or daemon that will come to call in battle. Each of these has it's own abilities, and their exact roll may change, sometimes within the same unit. But for the most part they all have one thing in common, they are big, tough and hit like trucks, not to mention they can carry some very nasty heavy weaponry as well.
This week we'll be covering a specific unit that was created specifically to defeat the Necron forces, the towering ghosts of ancient warriors called to battle. Wraithlords.
As most monstrous creatures, Wraithlords are stuck to infantry movement, however their toughness 8 means that only a few sparse attacks in our army can take them down without rolling a 6. (Thankfully with gauss ALL of our units can wound them on a 6 shooting). 3+ saves are, as every, problematic to punch through, and S10 will decimate most of our units in CC. With all this they can mount heavy weapons, allowing them to send several powerful shots out each turn that an unorbed squad might not be able to save against.
On the plus side, being limited to two heavy weapons means that they will be incapable of clearing out swaths of our forces, and in CC they can only kill 1-2 models a round (charging they max at 3). However with I4 and those S10 MC attacks, the chances of Necrons not getting swept is still depressingly low.
So Necrons, how do you handle Wraithlords, what tactics do you find most helpful, and what do you do to force them down and make them stay there?
When I play-tested against Eldar, I used Heavy Destroyers and mass fire of Warriors to bring it down.
Honestly, I feared him more than he proved to be effective, in that game. He just pounded the Monolith with no great effect while Heavy Destroyers whooped his arse!
So, just try to bog him down with something durable, and try to clear his 'hood of psykers, and hope he'll roll 1s!
Necrons W0/D0/L0 Dwarfs W10/D2/L6 (8th edition)
His 3+ isn't invul right? So Monolith PW, HD's, and Ctan are the only ones who can reliably take him down. Unfortuneately my lists don't use HD's or Pariahs (Deceiver is new to my list). I usually try to pop him with my regular destroyers while dropping a pie plate AP 3 on him (however I've only fought Eldar once).
I also forget what his Init is, would the Deceiver's 5 Init strike first? That'd be awsome.

since warriors can wound him on 6+ with gauss you can use them, enough gass will bring him downu
Luckily, this is one thing that hasn't changed since 5th. Necrons are'nt the swiss army knife they ought to be anymore. 5th stole our can opener, so we have to open cans with an cork screw instead. And our knives has got an irritating urge to flee...
But the function that lets us use the knife as a hammer hasn't been stolen and therefore we can beat everything to death. MASSED GUASS FIRE .
Ehm, i suggest that we expand this topic a litte bit to make it last longer. Just throw in every other monstrous creature in the game into the question. And i'll say either "Massed guass, Wraiths, destroyers or don't even care about it; Go for phaseout instead...
That's a good point Visseking, and something I had actually been considering. So as we're looking at eldar units right now let's add in the other Eldar Monstrous Creature, the Avatar of Khaine. Definitely has a different flavor, and may not always have the same approach to kill. *Attempts to Change the Topic Title*
The only real big thing with the avatar is his awesomeness in close combat. His toughness is the same as our own favourite monstrous creatures, but because of this awesomeness in cc i wouldn't consider sending a single tomb spyder into a fight with him. Maybe three...
A c'tan would rip him into pieces though. And a bugsapper lord could work pretty well.
Necron warrior shots are better waisted at wraithlords/infantry. But destroyer shots could take him down. S6 vs T6 is quite worth it.
