Welcome to Librarium Online!
hi guys, im planning to start an eldar army but am unsure about how to start. A friend said i should start with 2 boxes of dire avengers and a farseer. What are your thoughts on this? any input is much appreciated. Thanks
It is a solid start to an eldar army as many people swear by dire avengers as troops. I completely agree with a farseer as the HQ of choice. I would recommend you look at the battleforce. It gives you a transport and warwalker along with some guardians and a couple fo dire avengers all at a good price. The small DA squad and the guardians are the only thing that some people don't like about it.
I'm going to quote myself from an old thread about whether or not to use a battleforce to start an army.
"Read the Codex first. If you don't have one then make that your main priority before buying any pieces. Then you decide on your play style and what you want to use, the battle reports and threads on the Eldar forum are good for telling you what units can do what and how to make them do it. I don't mean mimic what someone else did, but read it so that you know it can be done. I'm guessing you're not rolling in money as you asked for a cost effective way to reach 1000pts, so you may want to play test a unit before before purchasing it. I do this by proxying units I already have and use pots of paint for things like Space marines, Storm guardians, etc. How I'm keeping the cost down is keeping track of how many models come in a squad, and how many models come in a boxed set, and if there is more than half a squad in a single boxed set than that is all that I will buy as i can't afford to buy two sets and not use all the models. Non-mechanised armies are cheaper than mechanised ones are if you are really interested in saving money, but basically make sure that you use what you buy and that you know that once you buy something that you will continue to use it. My list is about V.17 from all the tuning I've done to it before I bought any models.
Once you have looked at what army you want to field than you'll have to decide if the battleforce will get you there faster."

I have the battle force. I use one thing from it. A wave serpeant.
Start with a Farseer, and either 1 squad of DA and 1 squad of rangers. or 2 squads of DA, then get 2/3 wave serpeants, then 2 fire prisms. Then 10 banshees. That seems to be most peoples base for when building a solid army. Basically get your toughest units and then fill in the gaps with your own personal choice.
Overtime you will notice that the most competetive lists consists of a base off what i listed above.
I just have to say one thing. Are you sure you want to make an eldar army like EVERYONE else HAS many wave serpents and dire avengers or you could make your own unique list with things that not many eldar players have.
because if you have a typical eldar mech list people at your gameing club will be like "ow great another typical eldar mech list im not playing that again i swear i played the same thing like 50 times"
if you have a unique list " finally an eldar player with a different army than all the other eldar players" hence people will want to play against you more and have more fun than playing a typical eldar mech list that they face every time they play an eldar player.
Im not saying im totally right but at least around here at my gaming club its more or so like i stated. And im just giving a little advice that makes sence which you dont have to listen to if you want.
Lastly i have to disagree with Ericismyname because a footsloging or elite eldar army can be very competative depending on tactics and other thing.
Also if you do want to listen to me and make a unique list start by getting a pheonix lord of choice (almost no one uses them) then you can get a full or mid sized squade of that aspect of your pheonix lord or you dont have to because you can make your list very interesting by putting a pheonix lord in a guardin squad for example or some other squade as long as it isnt in any aspect squade<< (i think that what they called). But anyways it says in the codex. Also you can get Guardians and swooping hawks maybe shinning spears even but eventually your obviously going to get some common stuff so your list works but at least this way you list is very different from every other elder player.

If you are worried about being unique than by picking eldar period you are different than most others. The only time people get bored of playing the same army is any variation of any space marine army.
I didnt say that a mech eldar was the most competetive, i just have yet to see a footslogging eldar army do well...consistantly. I do however see foot slogging eldar armies get mowed down so much that, by the time they get into effective ranges they are too weak in numbers. Now i guess if you were foot slogging, 2 wrathlords, 3 war walkers outflanking , an avatar, and a fortuning farseer behind them. than i suppose thatd be different. I suppose youd need quite a few troop choices to attract fire and prolly rangers to *crosses fingers* pin enemy elites. but I havent ever seen an army like this, similer..but not enough to say it was LIKE that one.
Regarding Cougars suggestion on the Phoenix Lord you may wish to avoid that if you are going at a low point cost for the moment. A generously equipped farseer is worth approx 110-130 points. A Phoenix lord will cost around 200, They are worth it but if you are strapped for points he/she will take quite a considerably amount of it
You could go for an autarch, they can be equipped in many different ways to fit favourably into almost any aspect warrior squad and for relatively cheap (though for utility a farseer is probably best)
Guardians can be taken in larger numbers but at 1 less WS, BS and armor save, along with a gun range that leaves you open to assault next turn they are not my favoured Troop Choice. Dire Avengers are 4 points more expensive per model (In my opinion they are worth every point and penny).
Also if you are on a budget, 1 box of Dire avengers is a full squad or 2 minimum squads. For guardians 1 box is the min.
