Welcome to Librarium Online!
last thursday i ran a hq unit with 2 bodyguards all equipped as helios, planning on playing marines. unfortunatly instead i got put up against a troop spamming nid player.
in the end we played annilation and he got first turn, deploying 2 units of 32 gaunts, and 1 3 man warrior unit half way across the board. he moved as close as he could at me with everything he had but didnt get close enough to charge. i moved towards his warrior unit and rapid fired at bs 4 and above with a total of 9 ap2, S6 shots or better, and totally wiped them out, and his 2 gaunt units ran away, great i thought, but when the rest of his army came on they had little effect untill they were eventually ran down. i've posted this thead to find out what the veteran players think of this often frowned upon unit. is it great to have that firepower? or is it a 1 hit wonder unit? thanks in advance to all replys
Is that a Plasma Rifle/Fusion Blaster combo?
I use them quite heavily, For a command team, and a heavy units (warriors, termies, etc.) they are the best combo ive ever seen.
I personally only use two squads of them, one command, one basic. The other 2 squads are stealth teams to help me fight stuff like guants.
I use em often enough. Only use them if you already have 1 HQ that is a fireknife.
When not fighting MEQs Helios suits make good vehicle hunters, melta kills anything in armor that does not end with the name "Serpent."

Helios needs skill to use. I take one Helios Shas'El because it is BS5 (Targeting array) and you need to ensure that Helios hits what it aims at.
Helios is very specific in its target selection. As a rule I only ever hit tough units and armour with the Helios, hitting a Marine character with a Helios will insta kill it and the AP1/AP2 really hurts Termies and other tough characters.
The Fusion will hurt even TGH6 models and will eat armour. I use mine to take down transports because no matter what the armour facing I know it is going to do the job. I also use it as a Dread type unit hunter (a role it excels at) and as a sneak tank killer.
The sneak attack is quite easy to pull of, if you have Hammerheads or XV88's on the table the opponent will usually focus on these. While the opponent focuses on these I move my Helios El up the field and hit any exposed armour, it is funny when their tank goes pop but not from the direction they expected.
The Helios needs to be used carefully and in concert with other units. I often use my Helios with my Torch unit simply because the Torch unit can heap wounds on to any unit and the Helios is the finisher. Moving a Helios in to kill a unit of Marines on his own is not going to work well simply because of the shot volume it puts out. The marine unit will normally be in range to return fire, same goes using a lone Helios against a hoard unit (not sensible).
The Helios always has targets, you just have to be intelligent in its use. A 97pt Helios El should usually make its points back but more importantly it can turn games by destroying or reducing the effectiveness of those tough units that tau struggle against.
I avoid multiple Helios units because quite simply they will not have enough to do in a lot of games. I use a Deathrain squad, Torch (flamer and MP) squad and Fireknife El along with my Helios and they can usually handle pretty much anything. Taking multiple Helios suits would achieve nothing advantages and leave me unable to deal with hoard type units effectively. it is all about balance.
well i had them as a 3 man hq unit with 2 bs 4 and 1 bs 5 it was frighting the amount of power shots it puts out, but as you said they become less effective once they have took out there main targets, so in future il take your advice riki for you are the ninja!
I run that squad as a HQ. I also add 3 marker drones to it. Just for added ML.
It eats heavy armored troops.
I also manage to get a 3suit Flamer-7 Team, a two man Deathrain-4 Team, stealth suits and all the other choices I could want. (including a Sunforge-4 El)
cheers for all the help guys been brilliant as usual
I have an HQ/1BG as Helios ( Gibbs and DiNozzo, lol ).
I use them to off dreads, light vehicles, termies, MCs, C'tan, etc...
Finding yourself against a troop-spanning nid player, was pure bad luck. Though I was wondering, did your opponent have any "large" bugs ( warriors and up )? I use my Helios suits, against large bugs, to great effect.
yeah he had 2 unit of 3 warriors and a brood lord in a unit of stealers, we played dawn of war and he got to deploy first, typically deploying at the half way line, moved as close as he could, but could not charge (thank god). my first turn my 3 man helios command unit jumped in to rapidfire range and bye bye warriors, both his BIG unit of gaunts ran away untill turn 3 when the new unit of warriors got in range of them, or the 2 zoanthropes, he also had a carnifax (close combat one) another BIG unit of gaunts and a BIG unit of stealers that outflanked and ate 1 of my hammerheads.
I've tried the Helios, and while I agree that it can be used effectively, it has simply never meshed with my playstyle. My Fireknife Shas'els outperform any of my Helios builds time and again, because I prefer to pepper the enemy from range. My playstyle with Tau has never given me need or want of a Helios suit, so I tend not to take them.
