Welcome to Librarium Online!
Ok I'm sure all of you are wondering what in the world Games Workshop was thinking when they decided to put a quarter pound piece of pewter on the side of a floating plastic tank... Well when I was collecting my third Wave Serpent and looking into getting two Fire Prisms, I decided I really didn't want to have to deal with those awful pewter lasers. So I decided to get a cloudstrike squadron set, which contains three Falcons for $90US. One of them I converted into a Wave Serpent via Forgeworld conversion kit, the other two, I decided to make custom Fire Prism crystals for them.
After my first attempt at doing the crystal by making master templates and tracing multiple copies of them, I realized that doing this by hand isn't going to work. So I dropped the idea and went on to settle for a less interesting crystal, which was far larger than the original, but much less satisfying. It was only after a few weeks of using this crystal that I decided to have another go at recreating the original Fire Prism crystal using Google Sketchup to first make a 3D approximation of crystal, then unfurl all of the facets to create a 2D template.
Step 1: Download template
Step 2: Resize template (I had to use trial and error to get the template to match it's real size of 3 inches by 3 inches, so be patient with yourself, you'll probably need to change the printing settings to around I think it was 97% of original size.)
Step 3: Cut plasticard to exactly fit all of the black bordered shapes (do not make one big piece of plasticard for it, since you will be folding the whole thing into a crystal later.)
Step 4: Cut out the template making sure to leave small tabs on one side of the template so it can be glued together properly once folded. (I'm sure if you're willing to go through all of this, you know what I'm talking about and what needs to be done.)
Step 5:Fold along the black lines and glue at appropriate places.
Step 6: Cut out a small plasticard circle to mount the crystal on (should be a little wider than the base of the crystal, but not by too much, look at Fire Prism crystals for reference.)
Step 7: Cut a cheap pen (the endcap side, not the writing side) to a length of about 2 inches and file the side you cut to an even finish.
Step 8: Glue the cut side of the pen to the plasticard circle that's mounted on the crystal.
Step 9: Attach a Fire Prism Scatter Laser shield plate and a right-hand side shield plate from a Wave Serpent weapon shield plate together on the pen.
Step 10: Attach to Fire Prism via magnets or whatever other system you prefer to use.
I still need to make an appropriate scratchbuilt targeter/laser (the thing on the other side of the turret, but that part is a little more tricky to find parts for.
Edit: The targeter/laser has been constructed and is now available to view in the link below (post 21 of this thread)

Yea... I'll Post some pics of my version if you want?
Looking cool, and if you dint know it, is (almost-targeter...) completely unnoticable!
