What kind of Battlewagon should I take? I'm thinking that I should get one that has the Lobba, 4 Rokkit launchers, Grot riggers, Killakannon, Armor Plates, and maybe the 'Ard Case but I might want to but some guys in their like Lootas, since I'm planning to move where I'm in range of the enemy, then just sit there, firing my weapons at full capacity. What kind of Battlewagon do you take/think I should take?
I think the 'lootas in a battlewagon' strategy is a bad idea. The lootas are ironically safer in cover, since woods/ruins won't explode. To avoid the danger of blast/ordnance weapons, I like putting the lootas directly against the back of the deployment zone, so any blast/ordnance weapons aimed at them that scatter slightly away from them, but off the board, disappear completely. This isn't as effective in table quarter missions though, where 48in range isn't enough to reach everywhere.
In any case, it's not lootas, but 20 shoota boyz w/nob, powerklaw, bosspole, and 2 special weapons, that work very well in battlewagons. The wagon can move and the shootas can still fire. They're also great for claiming obectives, ramming enemy vehicles, and despite being shootas, they're still very good in the assault.
I'd never give a battlewagon more than 1 gun. Although it's tempting to load them up, if you move a single inch, then you'll only be able to fire one of them, so one is all you should give them. This is how I equip battlewagons (assuming they'll be a transport):
battlewagon w/one gun (usually a big shoota or kannon), grot riggers, and a deff rolla
Armor plates aren't really worth it, 'ard cases keep the units inside from being nearly as effective, and killkannons aren't effective enough for their cost.
If you want a really shooty unit, then don't use a battlewagon, use lootas, killa kans, rokkit buggies, warbikes, or deffkoptas. Battlewagons simply don't have the aim or number of shots to be effective. You're better off using a looted wagon with a big shoota, holding 5 burnas w/3 meks using big shootas. This gives you 4 big shootas and 2 flamer template attacks, for only 115 points, and you can still move and fire. A battlewagon with 4 big shootas and a kannon/lobba would not only cost a bit more, but it couldn't move and fire more than one weapon.
"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
i think the kannon is a better choice than the lobba it can be better used against both infantry and armour
with that kind of fire power its going to take a lot of fire from the enemy, probably wont last long
IMO its two many points for one model, what i suggest is to drop some upgrades and get a second BW
eg- BW w/ 2x big shoota, ram, kannon
BW w/ 2x big shoota, ram, killkannon
it may be more points than original but target saturation is key with orks, if you are going to take any unit in the codex its often better to take two of that unit,
your enemy will have to pick which BW they want to shoot at
for fun put lootas's in both, or try 1 with tankbusta's with no ard case of course
I'm with grax on this one (except I use 2 big shootas, for looks and to add more resistance to damage).
20 shootas boyz in a mad battlewagon that deffroll its opponents is awesome. I can't wait to get my paws on a second one.
It's also one of the few cases where burnas can be useful.
"Politics is the womb in which war develops"
how many big shootas do you rec to help avoid "weapon destroyed" casualties? I was thinking 2 (+a rolla).
Armies thus far....
what i run is 2x big shootas and a deffrolla with 19 slugga boyz (Nob w/ pk,bp) and a big Mek (KFF, squig, burna )
He asked for advice on shooty BW so i gave him my opinion on those,
i agree with 2x big shootas an extra weapon destroyed for 5 points is worth it when your being hit by all the enemies big guns
Okay here is my new plan:
Kannon: 10 points
x2 Big Shootas: 10 points
x2 Rokkit Launchers: 20 points
Grot Riggers: 5 Points
Killakannon: 60 points (I want this for some Nids that I know)
So for the Battlewagon Point Total: 195
What do you think?
I might pack this Battlewagon with Tankbustas when fighting Nids nad maybe burnas at other times.
Being someone that lost a whole squad of lootas to a single whirlwind shot the use of a battlewagon as a mobile pillbox has worked very well for me in tournaments. The presence of the lootas inside also helps with having the enemy concentrate firepower on the battlewagon, much of which will be ineffective (and would seriously hurt your nob transporting trukks).
Throw a couple of meks in the loota squad and you can repair most damage the vehicle will take Add a big mek and it becomes even nastier.
Being open topped the explosion is only strength 3 - lower than much of anything else that might get fired at you and if it comes to it you can assault from the vehicle as well.
I use mine with 4 big shootas - that's 12 shots with 36" range in addition to the shots from your lootas themselves.
Okay then I guess I will change my x2 Big shootas to x4 Big Shootas. I can switch around who I stuff into the wagon depending on who I'm facing, so the lootas might get in there, I should try it out.
Big Shoota + Kannon is the optimal setup. 2 weapons is enough to soak a couple weapon destroyeds before you go down, and if you fire the kannon at strength 4 you can still fire the big shoota and move.
