Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey everyone, here's a question for you all. What unit(s) would you say are required for competitive play? The reason I ask is I want to see if 'competitive' is a narrow or broad unit spectrum for our codex. Personally I feel that it is a mightily strong codex and certain crutch units aren't needed to still win (you know who you are) while others I don't think I'll ever see in a tournament setting (you also know who you are).
Looking to hear your responses!
have only been playing orks for a bit but i can definitely say 2 things "help" get you the win:
-lotz of boyz
nobz tend to just smash their way through anything and if played right, are really hard to get rid of. large mobs of boyz are great for soaking up bullets and returning the favor, not to mention the psycological factor they represent---> "holy F*** theres so many!". 100+ boyzs is definitely nothing to sniff at.
but thats just one side dice if you will, theirs so many possibilites in the ork codex that its hard to say what makes an ork list competitive. even grotz play a role and it all boils down to your play style and the synergy of your list. so i too am eager to see what the veteran ork players haf to say!
"In the kingdom of the blind, the one eyed man is king"
"Pray to the emperor, but keep rowing to the shore!"
Well, so far you've mentioned nobz. We can all assume that nob bikers will certainly help many lists become competitive. How about meganobz and regular nobz? Do they reduce an army's competitiveness? I would say Nob bikers increase, meganobz & regular nobz in a vehicle can go either way, while meganobz & nobz on foot reduce a list's competitiveness.
rolling buckets of dice whether it be a mob charging from a trukk or a mob blazing away with shootas.
And more Boyz
An HQ that can turn an enemy IC into a squig.
And more Power Klaws.
And most importantly because "Orkes' never beaten in battle! It sayz so in da Codex!"
My award winning Orky tale
Yeah, I agree that Nobz are definetly the most crucial unit, whether in a unit of boyz, or in mega armour they are a pivotal piece that no army should be without. Also I wouldn't play a game without at least 20 'Ard Boyz. These guys soak up the gunfire, and have a handy 4+ save which makes them rather durable, and thusly able to move great distances to reach that ever crucial assaulting phase.
Several people I have played with recommend that using Mad Doc Grotsnik is quite a useful addition to the army, as he can give some units Cyborks which cant get the Invulnerable saves normally. So you can give a unit of Stormboyz cyborks bodies, and also Kommandos, making them much tougher and hopefully giving the 160 point unit a worthwhile spend.

what makes orks competitive is that ork armies can be very diffrent from each other, sure they all have boyz and nobs with power klaws... but thats about it. the guy your playing could find himself up against a hord or a speed freaks or kan heavy or shooty or nob bikesr...ect
as long as you change your list a bit evey once in a while even people you play often can be caugth of guard by the lack of one unit being replaced by another...
the beauty of orks is that as long as your cores in place.. anything else goes.. thats what makes us strong. IMO
In the age old battle between quality and quantity, Orks win through quantity. They simply get the most bang for the buck out of each of their units, so the key to victory is fielding as many models as possible, without fielding too many units (or else kill points become a problem), and burying at least one powerklaw in each of them.
20-30 shoota boyz, with 2-3 special guns (big shootas or rokkits), nob, powerklaw and bosspole is THE most cost effective and versatile unit in all of 40k. Hands down. Lootas are also one of the best heavy weapons units in 40k as well. Each can put a ridiculous amount of firepower, and still hold their own relatively well in close combat.
These units, and also slugga boyz in trukks, big meks with kustom force fields, warbuggies, killa kans, mega nobz, big gunz, and anything with a skorcha (or combi-skorcha) are incredibly cost effective units, and the more you can squeeze in, the better.
Other good Ork units aren't necessarily the most cost effective, but are necessary for balancing out the army, and providing necessary support: Ghazghkull, grots, kommandos, battlewagons, biker nobz, warbikers, deffkoptas, looted boomguns, stormboyz, warbosses, and big meks w/SAGs.
The remaining units are far more marginal, and only good in 'specialized' lists, or in friendly games: tankbustas, looted wagons without boomguns, Mad Dok Grotznik, regular nob mobz, burnas, deff dreads, flash gitz, big meks without KFFs or SAGs, and anything with combi-rokkits or big choppas.
Being competitive with Orks is about packing as much power into the unit, providing the necessary support for these units, and eliminating any unnecessary waste.
Biker nobz are hit or miss, with any game against a gunline or 'lash' army being an automatic 'miss'.

"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
Nobz (particularly bikers, and in any case NOT foot slogging)
killa kans are still awesome, IMO.
That said, keep in mind that some armies don't have outstanding units, but can be very efficient when combining different units. Eldar, or orks under the previous codex, jump to mind.
The big mek with KFF is useless by himself, but priceless if used correctly.
"Politics is the womb in which war develops"
all of theabove is very true.
an ork army is just one big ork.
the boyz are the body and the trkks and bikes his legs..
then he has a shooty army and a chopping arrm...with a killy head or a protective helmet..
ok.. im taking this too far i can see that.....
Screaming. A ork general's breath should curdle blood and snap the bones of flimsier races (I'm lookin' at you elfdar).
But seriously, grax is right. Lots of boyz, coupled with a decent number of fast units and some dead 'ard shooting support is the best way to be competitive.
