Welcome to Librarium Online!
basically I'm looking for any ideas on how to paint and distinguish my warrior squads. i'm reletively new to necrons(only been playing about a month or so) and i only feild 2 squads of ten. i was thinking maybe vertical stripes on their shoulder pads to tell them apart. i don't want anything over the top. i'm going for the harbringer of death look, any ideas?
Necron are hard differentiate and still maintain a theme. I would try to keep it subtle by marking shoulder armor or faces. Maybe the chest necron mark could be colored differently. Just a thought, hope it helps.
there are two things that come to mind. paint the chest thing, not the symbol but the face a different colour. another option if your patient and with a little luck is to put a necron symbol on there shoulder. you can paint it or you can make a "sticker", printed peice of paper glued on the blended into paint job.
however fluff wise ever necron is identical! but its your call!
Don't mess up our fluff GW!
this isn't really decorative on the model itself but I paint lines on the rim of their bases so I can easily tell who belongs to which squad.
Unlike my Guard, with my Necrons I don't bother marking squads, as all the models are the same, so it doesn't matter how a squad is made up.
I also like to keep them the same, as that way I can mix and match my squads, for example some times i use 3 squads of 14, but if the game suggests, I can change that and have four squads with less, depending on the circumstances of the game.
What do your bases look like? Maybe the key is to make THEM look different, not the bodies. If you have an "outdoors" scheme going, try putting more/different-colored debris on different squads. If you are using a desert base, try cutting up some sprue to make "crystals." it could be a lot of work, but put, say, one crystal on all the bases from squad one, two from squad two, etc. Necron crystals are a cheap way to make your boys look good. I put a few on my warriors' and destroyers' bases (though I just spread 'em all around).
First I'd like to say, Necrons are Necrons. Squad markings really aren't in the fluff in my opinion. With that said, I have 2 suggestions that would work really well!
1) Base the Necron Crystals at their feet. 1 for a squad, 2 for another squad, etc. You could even magnetize them to change their squad.
2) I don't mark mine at all. When I play I face them AWAY kind of facing the center of the squad of you will. When you have 2 squads back to back you can clearly see which squad is which. (This is how I play).

Well you can always not bother distinguishing squads except via position, I personally wouldn't do anything permanent to the base or model, the model cause it just isn't fluffy and for the following reason, you might, just might, want to change up the squad numbers depending on the situation.
You can always use numbered/colored sticky tabs, or if you think it looks bad, put them on the bottom of the base.

put a small dot one the shoulder of squad two that way it still looks good but isn't too noticeable
I was thinking something like this, alternating shoulders for squads. it'll be a very thin line ideally. either gold on black or blue on silver. I'm only fielding 2 squads of ten at the moment so what do you think?
