Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was having a meandering wander over at Da Waagh yesterday and come across something interesting. Quite a few members there are starting to give trukks and wagons upgrades of claws, planks and balls. Now, I've always viewed these as pointless but there has been some success with them The boarding planks especially are noted as being good (allowed to do 1 mini's combat attacks if within 2" of vehicle). as long as there is a mounted unit.
What are your thoughts on these upgrades? Worth it or just superficial waste of points?
Klaws aren't so good, because if you're that close to the enemy vehicle, you should be destroying it. The only exceptions are against skimmers and fast vehicles, to keep them from contesting objectives, but there aren't many of those vehicles that aren't going to be able to destroy the vehicle holding them. So they can work, but they seem too situational to me to be good.
Boarding planks are the same way. If you're that close to the target, then pile out of the vehicle. Orks are safer out in the open then they are in their vehicles. The true purpose of the vehicles isn't protection, but speed.
"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
Trukks tend to die pretty quickly. so i say keep them as cheap as possible! one exeption is the reinforced ram, i always take this upgrade!
but for battlewagons, maby its worth it with a boarding plank. but it depends on how you play with it. Ive used boardingplanks on my transport / bunker wagons. They carry 20 shootaboys each, and i must say the plank may come in handy in some games... but for most of the times i havent used them. My wagons drive 6/7 inches forward and then lay down alot of fire. These units are my backup-units. If i need them up close i do that, if i need them shooting they stay in the wagon. While they are in the wagon, the nob can make some drive-by powerklawing, and ive used it on a few tanks and 2-3 dreads. Its really great when you can use them, but most of the games my shootaboys have had to jump out of the wagon(either by my will, or the rokkit hitting the wagons engine) and charge.
I havent tried the wreacking ball or the klaw, but they sound like a waste of points really. Wreaking klaw can be OK vs skimmers, but they will fly away before you even get close!
If you have the points, and you know you will face alot of vehicles, then take the planks on the wagon. But if you need the points, they are the first upgrades to go. And dont waste pouints on the trukks.
