Hey just a quick intro to the forums, seeing as I've lurked for a while but not made any posts
My name is Ryan and I'm 19 and from the southwest of England.
When not destroying my friends Chaos army with my Necrons I study Video Games Technology at UWE.
I loved nids on Dawn of War II so thought that collecting them in tabletop would go nicely with that.
I recently bought the Battleforce pack (1 Carny, Gaunts, Hormies, Genestealers, Warriors) and a Hive Tyrant.
I was just looking for some advice on where to expand my army from this point, I'm thinking of getting a Zoan, but are there any essential units that I should purchase first?
My main opponents are Chaos, Space Marines and a Thousand Sons Chaos player.
Any tips or hints would be much appreciated!
With the Battle Force and a Tyrant you are pretty well situated. I would personally recommend a Zoanthrope as a next step, due to the versatility of the Hive Mind powers you can put on them. Also more gaunts/stealers are never a bad idea, and the same goes for Carnifexes.
Also you might want to look into another HT or perhaps a Broodlord, to fill your second HQ slot in higher point games.
Otherwise experiment with some of the different units available. Lictors are awesome when they work, but it's easy for them to fall on their faces. Gargoyles look pretty awesome as well, but at $6 or so a pop, they're a bit on the expensive side, when you could be looking at 32 man squads.
While I am no expert, as I'm new to nids myself. I have play tested a lot of different units and done a ton of mathhammer.
It seems that the best way to bring down the heavy infinatry (powerarmour/termis) is to throw a lot of flak at em and hope some sticks or throw in cc monster that can deny them those precious armour saves of theirs. T7 is no laughing matter even to a space marine.

You would be best off writing an army list and posting it here to get some feedback. Then buy the models you need.
ok, all you need from here is- first i would get a broodlord... then a box of gaunts- i reccoment making the gaunt bodies have fleshborers and giving the hourmogaunt bodies spinefists. then get another box of warriors(give them deathspitters and scything talons-nothing else) then 2 or 3 carnifexes(id get one sooner though-theyr great!!!) the i think you would like to get some zoans last(NEVER GET RAVENERS OR HOURMAGAUNTS)
Truthfully, you wouldn't go wrong in getting a 2nd battleforce. All the things in there would be useful to have, and it's a great bargain for the models you're getting. $90, or however much that costs in England, may be a tad pricy, so if you don't like that idea I would say get more gaunts and warriors. You can then make 2 different kinds of warrior squads to do different things and more gaunts are always useful.
But really, with a 2nd battleforce you'd have 1 tyrant, 6 warriors, 32 gaunts, 16 genestealers, and 2 fexes. That's a good army and all of those models are always useful. Well, the hormagaunts are debatable, but I like them.
Cheers for the replies people!
@ soul of the brood
Ive just gone halves with my mate ont he new Space Hulk, so I have a broodlord and some more genestealers on the way Also why not Raveners? I love them on Dawn of War II, would be a shame for them to be rubbish in tabletop
That sounds like a good idea, as I was eventually going to buy more of all those things anyway, I got a dakkafex now and was gonna make a full cc fex for my second one, same with the warrior squad but the other way around.
Was liking the look of the hive mind powers, and I love the Zoan model so might have to pick one up! Would most likely give him Warp Blast and The Shadow in the Warp and then give The Horror and Psychic Scream to the Hive Tyrant
Battleforces are never a bad buy for nids-> fexes are always useful and there's a lot of ways you can outfit them. Plus you save a nice chunk of cash with them (something like $60 in Canada). If you can get 3 and a tyrant (as you're going splits on Space Hulk) then you're set for nearly anything. The only thing you'd really need over that is maybe some zoanthropes and possibly another tyrant with some tyrant guard. Other than that unless you want to go nidzilla with lots of fexes you're pretty much set. In that case it might be good to get more battleforces as more warriors are always fun and gaunts can be pretty entertaining in some games.
If you want to take nid warriors I would suggest taking them in units of at least 4 if not 5. Thats one of the reasons I would suggest getting 3+ battleforces, along with the fexes. If you're already getting a fex and a warrior box then you might as well get a battleforce because its cost is barely anything more than a fex and a box of warriors but you get stealers and gaunts in addition to it.
As for Ravs their problem is that they cost a lot of points but don't hit very hard and die easily. If you want to take them go ahead (the game is more about using the models that you like and having fun than anything else). I've heard of some people who love their Ravs and find them quite useful, though also challenging to use properly.
