Hey so I had a battle yesturday against a Tyrnid army, using a fast eldar army consisting of 2 squads of jetbikes, scorpions in a waveserpent, a falcon/guideseer combo, and the avatar. I've had a lot of success in the past with this army shooting and falling back with the jetbikes for the first couple of turns then assaulting with the avatar and scorpions. However, this game my jetbikes got caught by some high fleet of foot rolls (2 sixes in the same turn) and both of those squads were toast. I still managed to pull out a draw, but I was quite shaken in my faith in jetbikes.
So heres the deal. What are some tactics that are employed by jetbike armies when playing against armies with FoF? Do you just sit furthur back and only shoot the shuriken cannon? This is just an ideas question, so don't be afraid to post something stupid, cause I can't really think of much.
Thanks in advance!
When you say "Armies with Fleet of Foot",you mean Eldar, Dark Eldar, and Tyranids. Eldar and Dark Eldar have transports which means they rely on fleet somewhat less.
Against armies that can get you that far, hide behind cover, park on an objective, or just molest them with the range of the Shuriken Cannon.
A fleeting Tyranid unit moves 18" at most with the charge. Gargoyles and Hormagaunts can move 24" with the assault. Against Hormagaunts and Gargoyles, molest them with Shuriken cannons, you have the 24" range on them and you can move back 6" after firing, they shouldn't be able to get you.
If you keep cover between you and them, you may be able to shoot at Tyranids with a the catapults and then drive away, keeping 18" away from them at all times. To reach you, they need good move, assault, AND fleet rolls. If they're 1in off, they can't reach you.
Personally, I don't use Jetbikes because I hate the model. Otherwise, they're really good especially against armies that don't like to shoot back.
As an aside, against Tyranids, just take morevehicles. Tyranids can't deal with vehicles too well, and especially not Eldar vehicles.
Yea, unfortunately if you just shoot with the cannon you can't really kill enough of the little buggers to really stop them, so I had to risk the chance to kill a lot more. If the tyrnid player hadn't have rolled 6's on both of his fleets I don't think I would've had this problem.
However now that I think about it most armies are going to have some sort of troop that can assault 18", such as bikes/assault marines for SM, nob bikerz for orcs, etc... This is more of a question geared towards people who play jetbike-heavy armies, how do you deal with armies that have fast, assault oriented squads that can murder jetbikes in cc?
Remember, our bikes can Jump-shoot-jump. Jump out, shoot, then hop somewhere they'll have a hard time getting to you, say, on top of a hill.
I don't use bikes often enough, to be honest...though I'd love to.
I use a jetbike army from time to time. When it runs into faster assault armies/units I use the cannons then try to gang up on units at point blank. Generally the fast units are either small or have bad saves, force a bunch of saves and they struggle.
Hmm, yea I probably could have used the terrain to my advantage, I just need to think about it before I move them. Now that I think about it I could have jumped them back behind my waveserpents, then it would have been very difficult for the tyrnids to assault them (especially if they were close to 18" away).
Alright everyone thanks for your resposes!
