Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi all - I'm definitely new to things here. I played Space Marines about 10 years ago and recently decided to get back into things. I look forward to the gaming aspects as well as the hobby side of things.
Alright, so I decided to start playing Tyranid for a few reasons (which I guess really aren't too terribly important for the topic at hand). Long story short, they're really a neat looking army with a LOT of options, and these things really drew me in.
I'm at the point where I've got a group of Termagaunts, Hormagaunts, and Warriors ready for painting (well, the Warriors not yet...I'm still deciding what to do with them). I was trying to come up with a paint scheme that I really liked. I want something that pops and has a bit of flare to it. I don't mind spending time painting all the models with a bit of care - I've got a lot of free time after hours to dedicate to the hobby aspect of 40k. So my goal is to make my army look great and (hopefully) play great, too.
I was hoping I could get some help with a few things. Here's a few ideas I've had - hopefully I can get some feedback as to if this would be an OK idea and if it would look good in the end. I have a hard time deciding yay or nay since I've never painted them before and I don't know if something "unique" will look good on the little guys.
1) A black bone with pink highlights and yellow flesh. This is a very bright and stand out sort of scheme. Standard but simple.
2) Black bone with a very dark blue highlight and dark blue flesh. The lower gaunts have nothing special about them, but as the ranks are climbed and the units are more "decorated", I was thinking of doing a bit of a cosmic theme on the bone. Stars, galaxies, etc etc. So a Hive Tyrant would have a very intricate and detailed bone, Warriors would have a bit of something going on, gaunts have nothing. I like the concept, but I'm not sure how it would look.
3) A rich jade/turquoise bone (not sure on what color highlight to use) with a fleshy skin. I think the bone would really stand these guys out and give them a bit of pop that I wanted.
4) A bumblebee theme - black bone with yellow skin. Just a fun themed idea.
I can't really decide what would have good room for improvising on the high up models. Idea 2 sounds good in theory, but I don't know how it would come out in practice. Idea 3 feels like a nice pop. The first is fun because pink isn't too common amongst the Tyranids that I've seen, but I think the flash of these guys would be neat. The bumblebee theme is just a fun idea that I've probably seen before.
Does anyone have any pictures of some intricate bone designs that have been done? I just don't want to have this idea in my head that sounds cool but looks like junk and is nigh impossible to pull off effectively.
I really appreciate the help here. Hopefully I'm not being too vague or needy here, haha. Thanks a bunch!
Hello and welcome!
I'd recommend picking up the nid codex is you don't already have it. there's a section in the back with full color pictures of color schemes. You can use that to get an idea of how it may look. (I think the 4th edition codex has more examples.)
I'm unable to post links to others pictures as they block that from work, but here's a few of mine. My carapace is similar to your idea of black/blue highlights. (Mine is black to purple to purple/blue on the edges.)
That's awesome! It's got that ranked feel to it, too - since the larger units have a bit more embellishment on the shell. Very sweet pictures there. I have the 5th ed. codex, so I'll take a closer look at the pics. That tyrant is killer by the way.
firstly all the concepts sound really in your face and vibrant (much more adventurous than me grey carapace and navy flesh) which is good. I like thos kinda colour schemes. anyway i'll put my comments in the relevant spots of the quote in red.
Sir we have a lock on the Hive tyrant.
NO! SHOOT THAT SPORE MINE! OH GOD, ITS GOING BACKWARDS!
if someone helps you, give them rep.
The people who paint at the place I play and buy all my stuff from are absolutely INCREDIBLE at painting. I'm going to go tomorrow (Friday) night when they have painting night and try and get some ideas and opinions on these themes.
I think the second idea would be my first choice if it's doable. The first and third idea are equivalent to me in terms of awesomeness. I would really have to paint one of each of these guys to get the full impact I think, but since my army is just starting, I don't really have many spares lying around.
Again, the painters at my local store will probably be able to give me some pros and cons of each in terms of the aesthetic and "wow" factor from all their experience. Thanks for the little tidbits per idea, too.
