Welcome to Librarium Online!
Good afternoon all,
Within my previous post, I learned quite a bit about using FW teams ... and that I was crazy for not using the Kroot.
That being said, I decided to give them a second chance. However, I still need them to fit into the "theme" of my force.
So, I came up with this little poll to see what people think of it.
All help/ opinions/ suggestions are welcomed.

Kroot with IG models could be cool. Tau had rules for Human troops at one point and many IG armies simply surrender and join them instead of dying. Could be a fun conversion, maybe Catachans with some converted guns, very jungle fighter like Kroot are.
Prince of excess has a good idea. I like the catachan/kroot similarity too.

Errrrr what's so wrong with taking Kroot models. I don't really understand this quite common place practice of 'counts as' in regards to Kroot.
Kroot are a 40K race, you wouldn't replace Eldar with Catachans or Nids with Tau models so why this wholesale desire for 'counts as'.
I am not saying it is wrong, I just do not understand the dislike of Kroot.
I know you have a theme but how does Kroot/FW or Kroot/IG fit into it any more than straight Kroot?
A small point but one I think worth mentioning is I do not think IG solders or Fire Warriors would fight directly with Kroot units. The Kroot are extremely agile through woods and jungle and they fight under the control of a Shaper who directs the Kroots genetic development, they also have some unsavoury habits that Humans would find hard to accept. I think Kroot would fight autonomously, under the overall command of the Tau but fighting as distinct Kroot units.
I don't know the theme, he didn't explain so I went with what could be a fun conversion project. Maybe he just doesn't like Kroot models. I personally think they look nice (I like all the alien races in 40k).
Maybe explain your theme Opener?
I think the Kroot models are really really cool looking! But, to each their own. I understand wanting to stay relatively "pure" of non-Tau aliens. You certainly aren't the only Tau player with that desire. (Back in 4th edition, I played most of my Tau games without Kroot. But I don't think that's viable for 5th edition games.)
Anyway, if the Kroot models themselves are what you don't like, I don't see any problem with using Catachans as "Counts As" Kroot. The Gue'vesa rules are in kind of a hazy state right now. I'm not clear whether you can use them in any "official" GW events or not. In which case, there is absolutely nothing else Catachan models in a Tau army could possibly represent.
But I think you could get something really cool if you're willing to do some significant conversions. You could actually use mostly FW pieces: legs, arms, and the unhelmeted heads from both the FW and Devilfish and Hammerhead/Skyray kits. The big problem is the need to represent the lack of armour, so the FW torsos with the backpacks are out. You could probably use IG torsos, or look in the Fantasy range for torsos that could be used. (Empire? Elves?)
Chop off the pulse rifles from the FW arms and replace with Kroot rifles: Ta-Da!
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

All the rules for the big tournies I've seen have disallowed Gue'vesa, I personally keep my armies big tournament legal whenever possible. Just how I prefer to play. It's a shame they can't really be in an official capacity cause it kind of steps on IG toes in some peoples minds.
I don't think my post got the true point across, hehe.
I don't want 'count as', rather giving my Kroot some character. Either mixing a Kroot set with a IG or FW set. Giving my Kroot a more 'military' feel, not to mention some character.
Also wanting to add some fur clocks and bits from the Kroot sprue.
Maybe have the odd Kroot chewing on a helmet ... or something ...
Just a reminder: Don't forget to put closing dates on all your polls.
