Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello again servants of the Star Gods!
This week we're gonna run through an counter-unit topic. MOSTLY this is because, hard as it is to believe...I've run out of units from our army for us to discuss!!
Durring the Eons of our Slumber, our prey has been let free to roam. They have multiplied, spreading their filth and usurping our realms. These mortals now far outstretch the numbers of the Necron forces, now their herds must be brought to the slaughter.
So overall this week we will be covering horde/swarm lists. These generally come out of Ork, Tyranid, and Imperial Guard armies, though some others make it possible as well. All have piles upon piles of wounds, with low armor and relatively blunted statlines, though their sheer masses of attacks and wounds make them dangerous. Throw in that they are often supported by large, tough units (tanks, monstrous creatures) it can become difficult to prioritize with a Necron army, whose weapons are all effective against both targets.
So Necrons. How do you deal with hordes? What units do you find most effective, and what maneuvers can break their sheer numbers? How successful have you been against horde lists in the past (by past I still mean 5ed).
Attrition through firepower! Lots and LOTS of destroiyer shots. I have 10, I field 9-10 ALWAYS in 2k games. If I had 15, I'd HEAVILY consider it always. Could you imagine 45 S6 shots per turn! LOVELY!!!
Also, the monolith is awsome. The gauss arc can hit a LOT of units and do lots of S5 dmg to every squad. And only HEAVY hitters can nail it well. For example the Powerklaw his Ork warboss tried to use is S9 not S10 like he thought. Meaning he could ONLY pen on a 6. But still, a possible LARGE massive boomer. Also the particle whip is good until they close to that 12" range.
"There is only do, or do not. There is no try." - Yoda
definitely the monolith with its template or destroyers with their tons of shots. really anything that shoots a lot that isnt rapid fire (dont want to get that close)
i would recommend the deceiver for his ability to force morale tests. hoardes usually have lower LD thus forced morale tests is a great strategy, that coupled with some flayed ones to head off the assaults that are getting too close seems like a good idea.
the deciever is good in CC especially against low strenght and toughness enemies but you'll probably want him taking on the tougher stuff rather than being bogged down
how do scarabs do aganst hoardes?
Has anyone ever considered beating them at there own game? Seriously, guardsmen have terrible aim, no AP and low strength, large quantities of warriors mow them down (by large I mean 30-40) and you can use some points to buy scarabs to tie up his heavy weapons teams. Then use Destroyers/Immortals/Monolith/whatever elite choice you want to deal with the tanks/monstrous creatures/characters. The best part is that the "swarm" goes towards your Phase Out...and warriors will still kill more than enough points to make it worth it.
I also suppose (mainly for the IG) you could infiltrate plenty of F.O.s and charge/DS the scarabs to slaughter their gun lines while you DS/footslog the rest of your forces into position...with all those guardsmen tied in CC (how non-cron of us) massed guass is more than enough to incapacitate those darn tanks (or you could use a DS monolith to start popping Leman Russ's like nobody's business)

We are good at killing guardsmen. Exactly as good as before the nerfs. A resorb and lots of warriors will take down the guardsmen, but their tanks shoots big templates that hurt. So, i like to use a small wraithwing against them. Sneak into their backlines and kill the heavy weapon teams and russes and the warriors can handle the rest.
The problem with tyranids and orks is that they are more cc oriented and we suck at cc these days. And our gadgets doesn't work as good any more. Mostly because a high ld doesn't keep things from fleeing these days.
[Rant](One of the thing i hate with 5th, just as other weapons than flamers ignore cover. I mean come on "A blast burning with the strenght of a sun and renders covers useless"? S6 AP4? Wouldn't it at least be like a plasma weapon then?)[/Rant]
So, all we needs is warriors to take out the hordes and something to take out the tanks/Motor Cycles.
I've faced two guardsmen armies recently, and both had very similar compositions. Except for one thing. The second used the new "amorphous blob platoon" ability, and as great at the Necron weapons are at killing light infantry, I just couldn't put a dent in that squad. Against smaller squad they just got vaporized, but with a little cover those giant squads just remained undented. Had the same problem against orks. Maybe I gotta work on my target priority?
What does this "amorphous blob platoon" ability do? And I got plugged into the my college's WH40k (and other games of a similar strategic focus) club and there's another 'cron player! I'm happy.

I think they are referring to their ability to merge several 10-man squads into a big one
My thoughts: against Guardsmen, just assault them, even a few Warriors can wipe a giant squadron in no time
Against others: is there a problem which cannot be solved by Immortals?
