Welcome to Librarium Online!
One of my good buddies plays guard and I've had a really tough time playing against him. Last night we played a 1000 point game. It was very close but most of my army had been decimated in the process.
His setup was a couple vet squads, two special weapon squads, company command squad, 3x auto cannon heavy weapon team, two Chimeras, an armored sentinel and a LOT of standard guardsmen. Over 70 dudes to hack through.
Hive Tyrant, Wings, TL Devourer x 2, Toxin Sacs, Warp Field, Flesh Hooks, Psychic Scream
Warriors x 3, Death Spitter x 2, Barbed Strangler x 1, Extended Carapace, Scything
Spinegaunts x 8, Without Number
Spinegaunts x 9
Hormagaunts x 9, Flesh Hooks
Zoanthrope, Warp Blast, Psychic Scream
Genestealers x 7 Flesh Hooks, Scuttlers
Genestealers x 7 Flesh Hooks, Scuttlers
Carnifex Scything Talons, Barbed Strangler, Bio-Plasma, Extended Carapace
Sooo... he wins turn, 5 objectives are put down, dawn of war.... crap. Anyway tyrant gets a nice spot, gaunts and hormies on the table.
Turn 1 uneventful as dawn of war usually is.
Turn 2 play it safe, really want to commit the tyrant but without support... nah. A bit of shooting on his side. His gunslingers outflank and blast my hormies off the table. They had cover but not from the outflank position. Ouch. A couple random gaunts get shot in the head.
Turn 3 Both genies are in on each side. I know he has cannon fodder on the edges for a reason so he'll shoot my guys once close combat is done. I tried to keep the brood sizes small for a chance to get stuck in. Both manage to charge and eat 2 full infantry squads.
Tyrant shoots a chimera and shakes it, takes a gun off. Zoan gets sniped. Command squad pops out of chimera and shoots tyrant with plasma. Only take 1 wound. Yay!
Turn 4 Pounce on the command squad and kill a bunch of em. Company commander scores 2 wounds on the tyrant with his fist. 1 genestealer squad gets erradicated. As expected. The other manges to survive with 4 guys but gets tarpitted with the sentinel.
Turn 5 This is where lady luck slaps me in the face. Tyrant wiffs all his attacks on the command squad. They get some hits but fail to wound. BUT, he has a standard bearer and it counts the squad as having inflicted one extra wound. I'm fearless so I take a wound and roll a... 1. I die. Normally I'm pretty sporting but the odds of this happening are pretty ridiculous. I fume on the inside and try not to express my malcontent
The genies actually killed the sentinel with 3 rending hits and proceed to tie up his heavy weapon team, at least something went well that turn hehe.
Turn 6 Kinda goes downhill from here. My without number squad I was hoping to get killed earlier is unable to do anything due to synapse but eventually dies. They respawn but are not able to fleet enough to cap a point. Just short 2 inches. The other gaunt squad takes a point. He was just able to get 2 points secured while the 5th was contested by my pissed off carnifex.
All in all it was a close game and very tense, neither one of us was sure what was going to happen. He still had a ton of dudes left alive at the end though. I'm just trying to think of what I could have done better. The stranglers did a decent job of mulching infantry but there was simply too many of them to deal with. I know I can't expect to outshoot the guard so I waited for the right time to strike en masse.
I'd like to hear your war stories against guard!
To be hnest the only thing i think you did wrong was you took the wrong number of hormaguants. 9 was never going to do anything. i use 20 with toxin sacs and an adrenal gland to great effect, but if its guardsmen, you may actually want to try carapace and toxin sacs. slam those into a squad of guardmen and watch them die and for a change, youll actually get a save with them. always give them toxin sacs if you take hormaguants.
As far of war tales are concerned, the memorable game i had was when a squad of hormaguants charged 3 valkyries flying a long way up in the sky, leapt up a good 100meters or so and knocked all 3 out of the sky
Your friendly neighbourhood gargantuan creature
Just spam him with big targets. That's how stompy gets it done, there's a reason swarm Nids is a dying art, at least until a new Codex. Almost all Tyranid guns can chew up lots of Guardsmen, and they may not have the guns to drop you fast enough in return. If they do, you probably lose.

Outflanking, blast templates, and laughter.
My list was already blast focused but I pretty much came to the same conclusion that I just need more boom fexes. I feel cheesy doing it as I prefer a balanced list but I don't seem to have that much of a choice. Swarmy is very challenging to play at least.
With my Blood Angels I know what to expect and can usually rely on my units getting the job done. With swarms I've had streaks of suck that are downright demoralizing. Never mind spending a month trying to do a good paint job on hormies only to see them all blasted in one round of shooting. I think I'll leave my fexes unpainted... they won't look as dangerous hehe.
