Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was looking at some of the rules people think we need to add to our new codex.
Here is a variation on one of the ones I found.
I think we have a few problems with our army as it is not as many ways to deal with tanks reliably. and swarm armys aren’t as useful as nidzilla. This is something interesting that takes care of both.
Just think of swarms of gaunts climbing all over a tank and poking their claws in every place they can eventually clogging up some of the weaponry or tracks rendering it useless.
Rule: Strength in numbers - A gaunt unit can replace its attacks for one single attack at Str X/2 (S10 max). X being the number of gaunts in that squad. So if you got 20 or more you can take a single attack at S10 (20 - S10, 18 - S9, 16 - S8, 14 - S7, 12 - S6)
Also when the tank explodes most if not all of the gaunts would probally die in the explosion as you would expect from them crawling all over it.
This sounds rather amusing. Take the aforementioned squad of Gaunts and you have twenty S10 attacks. You will be lucky if you DON'T explode the vehicle.
Additionally, make sure to state this is only against vehicles. Otherwise, twenty S10 attacks against infantry is just really really scary.
Actually i was thinking that the Unit as a whole replaces all their attacks for 1 big one. But even that could be used against things other than a tank i suppose.
I would think that 20 gaunts ganging up on one marine captian should probally be able to take him down with one hit. (Although in this case it would probally be better to take the 20 Str 3 attacks they normally get)
This is an interesting idea, but think its hidieously overpowerd, guants taking out a landraider or monolith? thats just plain wrong. however the idea seems workable, perhaps something like this?
frenzied swarming: this ability only works against vehicles in combat; the guant squad gains no attack bonus for charging this turn. This ability only applies to guants touching the vehicle. Roll a D3 and add the result to the strenght of the guants for this turn of combat only.
So assuming you get about 7-10 in contact with a vehicle and on average roll a 2, you get 7-10 S5 attacks, so unlikly to knock out a vehicle, but certainly cripple it. also this means that, combat vehicles are rightly high on untouchable, but not unkillable.

Just a little mathhammer on that rule:
Assuming 18 in base contact (I know it's unlikely to get that many, just makes the numbers easier)gives you
Vehicle having moved 6" or less gives
6 S4 hits
6 S5 hits
6 S6 hits
Becomes for AP values
Compared to regular gaunts which can't even glance a 10, that's awesome. Now let's compare S4 gaunts, say 36 of them charge (two reduced broods after shooting) and all get to attack, but only 18 will get special attacks.
Special attacks first (Attacks):
# of hits:
AP values for hits
Compare to our 36 S4 hitting on charge giving:
108 S4 attacks
54 S4 hits
9 APV 10's.
I think it's rather conclusive that this could make a horde army viable again, as we can take down all but the heaviest of tanks with upgraded Hormies (or even upgraded shooting gaunts). I would be curious to know how this turns out for someone if they can find an opponent to let them try it.
Ahhh. When i made my surgestion about the d3 i was refering to 1 roll for the whole brood, just to save the players sanity and to speed up the overall process, whilst the overall effectiveness is far increased by your method, i cant help but think it may get a bit complicated.
however seeing as you did all that, i think its only fair i should have a go at putting my versoin up
Asuming 18 base contact as you say and attacking a vehicle with rear armour 10 everytime 36 attacks and 18 hit.
S3 basic - with roll of 1 - 3 glance on 6's
- with roll of 2 - 3 glance and 3 penetrate
- with roll of 3 - 3 glance and 6 penetrate
S4 basic - with roll of 1 - 3 glance, 3 penetrate
- with roll of 2 - 3 glance, 6 penetrate
- with roll of 3 - 3 glance and 9 penetrate.
WOW, thats, savage. obviously 18 is a bit unlikly, so asuming only 1 squad gets in and gets 8 models...
ill do this later, but for the meantime, this does seem to improve hordes a great deal

Maybe reining it in to make it for every 5 gaunts they get a +1 str (over their base) to attack a vehicle. With rear armor being the hit location these days I don't feel 120 points of gaunts should be able to hit S10, it's unnecessary.
Or for every 5 guants in the unit you get one "Krak grenade" giving them an attack that COULD kill a vehicle, but won't necessarily do that readily. Gaunts CAN take down vehicles but it take absolute freight-loads of them to do so.
Why not just like every two in "Combat", must be part of same brood, give you a S6 attack need at least 10 in order to be able to use it. Just a thought, as I don't know many AV13 back armor vehicles, so S6 is really all that's needed. That also gives you a max of 16 attacks, always needing at least a 4 to glance. Still not posing a threat to something like a Monolith, LR, or some walkers, yet it lets a swarm of gaunts take down most vehicles. Does help stop the thought of "I'll just kill or bog down the big gribblies so he can't kill my tanks, and take my time or don't care about, the rest."
It's also a bit simpler than some of the other things we've hit on, as you're counting the number of units that are attacking a vehicle anyway. Whaddya think?
this is a really creative rule that isn't too over powered and it might solve a little bit of the mech problem because all of those low AP single shot guns would be even more of a liability when you're fighting a hoarde
it's just not fair that a mech army can be almost un-afraid of a horde of gaunts, this balances that
and as previously stated maybe a 2:1 gaunts to strength bonus? or maybe even a max strength bonus of 10 or 12?
