Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey! I was just wandering... well, recently I've been going destroyer spam in all of my lists. I recently played a 1500 where I used 6 Normal, 3 heavy and 1 lord. But I was wandering which was better. Should I take 4 more normal or stick with the 3 heavy? Its just that I was about to order some bitz, and it might be worth ordering some gauss cannons to convert my heavies. Should I? is it worth it? 4 normal or 3 heavy... your input please.
I would say 3 Heavies, but it 'cause I just like them.
But it really depends on what you want, Anti-Infantry+Anti-Light Vehicles or Anti-All Vehicles.
But I would still go for heavies, it's better to have some hard-hitting shots for stuff you really want to blow up fast
Necrons W0/D0/L0 Dwarfs W10/D2/L6 (8th edition)
Keep in mind that those heavy Destroyers are great for popping characters with high toughness (and poor/non-existence inv. saves) or killing MCs at range (die 'Nids!)
Dark Lord of the 'Crons
The "pro-heavy!"-faction seems a little over-represented here, so I'd like to throw in a word for standard destroyers.
A heavy destroyer and a standard destroyer kill an equal amount of MEQ on average. If the MEQ are in cover or have an invulnerable save of any kind (thousand sons or whatever), then the standard destroyer is twice as efficient.
The standard destroyers sheer amount of shots cuts through light vehicles (rhinos and such) like butter while a squadron can easily stun or weapon-destroy/immobilize even a land raider, effectively disabling it.
Sure, the heavy destroyer may be a little better against heavily armored targets and terminators, but the standard destroyer is by far much better against any squadrons and any non-terminator infantry. The heavy destroyer can instant-kill T4, but how many times do you get to do that? Thrice the number of shots can do the trick pretty easily as well...
One may think that they are equally durable, but a squadron of three is so easily wiped out and that's the maximum size a heavy destroyer squad can be. Standard destroyers excelling better in most situations, being a little cheaper, and coming in larger squads does really, really help a lot.
I'd go standard destroyer any time, unless you need the fast attack slots for something else dearly. The standard destroyer is surely one of the very best units in the whole 40k universe...
consider heavy destroyers as necron tanks that aren't as effective as enemy tanks
it's good to have a few but you dont want to load up on a bunch of weak tanks
As I said, heavy D's do have their advantages. But as also stated the Destroyers are probably the much better unit in terms of composition and use. If you really want a mobile force then heavy D's are a great Heavy support option, but only after you finish getting destroyers and everything else. Personally, I'm not sure I'm going to get Heavy Destroyers anytime soon, but I will be getting some Destroyers with my next purchase.
Dark Lord of the 'Crons
I'd almost always consider 3 at max heavy destroyers for tank busting transports, once you've done that you can leave the normal destroyers to kill the infantry.
personally I'd go with 2 squads of 2 Heavy and 2 squads of 3-5 ordinary with a Destroyer Lord with Res Orb for good measure. The reason for 2 squads of 2 heavy is for WBB as if the single unit of 3 is destroyed as you do now they cant WBB. 2 squads of 2 should allow you get at least 2 kills per shooting phase 3 or 4 if really lucky, enough to do some serious hurt to even a Carnifex or Tyrant, or even greater Daemons armoured vehicles aside.
If you do the maths on even points between the two, the Heavies come out ahead in a select few categories. Even then it's a pitifully slim bonus, and unless you need to physically destroy a tank I'd leave them at home.
But then I'd suggest a Destroyer Lord with a warscythe. Far more effective!
