Hey all, a former eldar player here, just started playing orks and I'm looking for some advice on what direction to take my army. My local games workshop staff member advised that I pick up the AoBR pack to get a good starter army, so I did that. Next I'm thinking I'll try to fill out the boyz squads a little more (beef them up to 20/30 each), but after that I'm kinda scratching my head.
I'm leaning towards a slogging army, what do you think would be a good next step after the boyz?
For a slogging army you're gonna want a Mekk with a Kustom Force Field. Mobile cover is a huge advantage and he's not bad in CC with a Burna. Grab some special weapons as well. In squads of 20 I'd go Big Shootas but if you plump up to 30 Rokkits become a very good option. You'll hit with one most of the time and they really help against all those vehicles people are running.
Also grab PK Nobs, for every unit. Pretty much mandatory.
Lootas are another great option. You can run a VERY strong army with just Shoota Boyz, PK Nobz, Meks and Lootas. A guy got first place at a RTT near me a few weeks ago with such a list, pretty much stomped everyone in attendance from what I heard.
With foot sloggers i like to see i couple deff dreads/killa kans behind about 150 boyz with lootas to support and a mek leading. This makes those deff dreads either really good support, or good targets to lessen shots at your boyz. 80-90 choppas hitting any line is too much. You'll over whelm them quickly. Don't throw your good units at their good units. Throw 30 boyz against their 8 terminators and watch your mek and nobz rip open row after row of ground pounders... your boyz won't run and your boss will slaughter everything.
Deff Dreads can be ho hum, Kans with Grot Zookas are amazing though, especially against other lists with lots of models. Keeping them by the Mekk also drastically increases their longevity which is a problem for walkers.
I play a foot slogging army and a word bearers chaos, and only with the foot slogging orks have I ever won a game...
I dislike the idea of 12 boys in a trukk as its just not enough when you wanna hit them hard and 20/30 boys even if walking scares the crap out of me despite their lack of armour and wit.
A kustom force field with some kans as well for extra DCCW if you get into close range maybe with grotzookas (dunno how the lads feel about them but they don't seem too bad) and expand the deffcopta squads a bit. But filling out the boyz squad should be the first priority for any new warboss.
Everything above is great advice. Just be sure to put a nob, powerklaw, and bosspole in every unit. They're invaluable for making sure you win drawn out battles of attrition.
With footslogging boyz, I'd always use most, if not all of the following:
1. Big mek w/kustom force field (a must have, especially against Eldar and IG)
2. Lootas (I like using 2 units of 9, hidden in cover)
3. Lots and lots of shoota boyz (opponents will just keep backing away if they're slugga boyz, but shoota boyz have much better shooting, allowing the assault to be optional)
4. Killa Kans (I've learned to love these guys, but I prefer kmbs over grotzookas. They provide great strength 8 AP 2 shooting and also great for assaulting vehicles and any infantry unit that can't hurt AR 11)
On a side note, I'd just convert the Killa Kans. The models are far too expensive. Just take a barrel or similar bit and glue on some proper arms, legs, and a gun. That's what I did. ^_^
"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
Okay, thanks for all of the advice thus far!
So my next step of getting a couple more packs of boyz (I think I'll stick with choppa boyz, after playing a shooty eldar list I just wanna get stuck in asap) and a mek with force field. Is there a mek model that has the force field or do you have to make one?
Also, its there any space for deff-coptas or nob bikers in a slogging list like this or are they too out of place. I was thinking something that could go tie up the enemy a little while the boyz march up the field in the first couple turns. Also I think the deff-coptas look really sweet so I wouldn't mind painting some up real nice and having them in my regular list.
I believe this is what you're looking for if you want a KFF (its on his back).
If you like deff koptas, why not. I don't think they're the strongest unit in the codex by a fair way, but they do have their uses, can harrass transports and be a general nuisance. They are a fairly easy KP though if you take one by itself, thouht its a trade off for the added manoeuvrability thqat they have. Personally, I'd take a pair, but separately.

I'd actually go all Shoota Boyz for any foot army. The extra shots almost makes up for the -1A in CC and they make way better babysitters for objectives because of the shooting. You also don't have to just run them every turn, you can move and shoot if the situation calls for it.
People underestimate what 30 Shoota Boyz can do outside of CC.
