Does anyone use this unit anymore??? ther model has never appealed to me ever. But at least in times long past when pistols shot twice and tehy could hold objectives they were good now I am almost never field them for any practical reason. Anyone here still use them effectivly? Any ideas that could be shared?
The best (and probably only good) thing about mandrakes is there fun deployment rules Not many real uses for it, but its fun, and good for annoying people.
Dark Eldar - Everyone stole Our 2+ Poisons
I'll sometimes run a unit of 5 just for the scare factor the unique deployment has against new opponents. Old opponents know that the mandrakes are horrible and don't fear them.
I do have to add that in planetstrike I have had good luck with mandrakes. I take the ability that lets you give a whole squad melta bombs and combined with mandrake deployment they are usually pretty good at getting in a good spot to blow up some bunkers. The problem here is that there are still units in our army that can probably do it better.
I had a funky list that I would use occasionally back in 4th that ran a unit of them. The list basically had my entire army deep strike except for the mandrakes which were my only deployed unit. Due to their invulnerability for a few turns, I could do this safely without auto-losing due to having no models on the table.
With 5th, I don't even have to do that since you don't have to have models on the table at the start of the game.
Total garbage? No, you just have to know how to use them and know their potential.
First of all their deployment allows them to make contact with the enemy without having any losses (in most cases)
Who can they kill? Enemies who don't have an extremely high save and aren't cc specialists.
Most troops fit this profile, even tactical marines. (they can win a cc against marines with some luck)
They give some psychological advantage and can be useful in some cases.
They're not as good as wyches, but can't get shot down before arriving in cc, their deployment is what they're all about for now. I admit that if their cc was improved they would be more attractive.
Also with the 5th edition they get a 2+ save in most cover, which added a bit of fun.
In a way they traded offensive cc power for special rules and extra survivability.
They're also cheaper than a wych unit with raider.
They're not really killers, but they'll kill a few before going down, but most cc battles they'll keep some enemy unit busy, maybe even destroy it. They can be quite anoying.
Hellions are complete garbage, mandrakes are ok if used well, hellions will always be crap no matter how well you use them.
the planet striking mandrakes is pretty usable one. I'vd been adding them rarly to see how well they work as a contesting unit that is sneaking them up on three different objectives and if any need some support or just plain someone to contest it against the enemy I'll pop em out in cover (of course) and just let them stay there while the enemy wastes ammo at them. If I can't take the objective I get the min close enough if not already to contest it again t the opponent. Probobly too high of a point cost even for a 5 man squad for that kind of use but it usually works against small bodied armies.
I always think of mandrakes as my little monkey wrench, my little way to mess up the other players plan. I like making the other team play by my rules, thus drakes fill that little void in my soul making them serve some purpose. I just hope we see a steady use for them i nthe new codex that has been coming for how many years now?
NEW DARK ELDAR! Hold all armies I have a new purpose in life!
I tried a unit of these the other week, they annihilated some DS'ing stormtroopers and sat in cover while battle tanks tried to move them for 3 turns. They were actually worth their points this one time.
But yeah, they aren't great.
