I have pretty much sorted the army I am building and I have about 200pts left to play with.
I have 2 HQ, 1 Elite, 4 troops and 2 heavy.
SO ideally I would like a Fast attack choice. Finally I decided to settle on vypers. I am toying with the current configuration but would like some idea/comments.
3 Vypers (EML and shuriken cannon upgrade)
Seems like a good all rounder. Good anti-tank and great antihorde (being able to move 12" and fire 3 plasma missile and 9 shuriken cannon shots should hurt)
I used one vyper today against an inquisition player, taking out a glorious 6 sisters before going down in a hail of exorcist missles.
Players don't know what they're looking at half the time when they see things like vypers. They're units blandly given the 'useless' label and punted aside. My only opinion on the matter is that in this game of foxhole warfare, you might aswell lay down as many shots as you can.
Vypers are pretty expensive for what they are, so while the EML has its uses I think you might find a brightlance more reliable. Moving away from scatter dice should be a top priority IMHO as these rolls will be the ones to screw you over the most often.
That is the build I normally use if I use vypers. The biggest reason not to take them is that for about the same price you can get 3 warwalkers with even better guns.
Warwalkers share their slots with wraithlords, fireprisms and falcons. So while good in theory, remembering that bolters can down a warwalker is an important point, not to mention being a lot less maneuverable.
It appears that with vypers you can tankshock and potentially ram, so if all else fails, in the final two turns, chuck on those 36" ramming helmets and go for glory! There's nothing quite sending half of the enemy home using a single vehicle but hey, that's what they do right.
I agree that the vypers best features are speed and being in the fast attack slot. But the list has an open HS that he could take walkers in. Walkers are a bit tougher because they are not open topped like the vyper.
I am not a vyper hater but in most cases the walkers give more bang for the buck. If the list is dependant on everything being able to move very quickly then they can actually be better than the walkers. But it is only in this special case that they are, in general the scout move of the walkers gets them into a good firing position and then it is about weight of fire which walkers do very well.
i have two vypers, personally i dont like them that much. i always seem they miss too much, and they die WAY WAY WAY to fast, or just be shaken/stunned/weapon destroyed....
open toped armour 10...no thanks
Ok, it might help if I give you a rough idea of what I already have.
10 direavengers: bladestorm, defend
10 guardians + warlock + EML
10 guardians + warlock + scatter lazer
Warwaklers X2: shuriken cannons
I like the movment of the vypers and frankly don't really like the look of most of the fast attack options (although swooping hawks look good).
Unless you really really like the models hawks are rarely worth thte points. Yo yoing them against GEQs might get their points back but overall they are painfully fragile and weak on shooting.
Since you already have walkers and I'm guessing you don't want more then the vypers may work for you. I would also say take a look at warpspiders, They can fire more str 6 shots than the vypers, have good speed, a 3+ save and the second jump to help keep them safe.
I kind of like my 3 walkers armed with 2EML each and sat at the back of the table with my Farseer HQ (guide, fortune, doom, spirit stones etc). The Farseers primary role is to field rune-wargear to screw up the oppositions psyckers. He almost always uses guide to help target the missiles and a big advantage of walkers is they get to field 2ELM each which arn't twin linked so guide is really maximised over prisms, falcons & wraithlords especially as the whole sqaud is effected. If the enemy has got in close the farseer also uses doom whilst if they are at range the walkers are defended using fortune.
Back to the question of Vypers, I don't have any fast attack at present so should consider them but only as weapons platforms to get more EMLs on the table. Then again 2 living crew per vehicle their a bit costly on Eldar lives.
